Abiku

Abiku
Create (midjourney.com)

The Abiku manifests as a swirling, thick black mist that obscures its true form, with hints of its grotesque nature peeking through. Within the fog, one might catch sight of piercing white eyes that glimmer like distant stars, and jagged, monstrous jaws that seem to stretch wider than physically possible. The mist itself seems to writhe and pulse, giving the impression of a sentient being. When it approaches its victims, the air becomes chilling, and a faint echo of forlorn whispers can often be heard, adding to its otherworldly presence.

Behavior

Abikus are cunning and methodical in their actions. They often appear to be innocent children, luring their victims into a false sense of security. Once they have isolated their target, their demeanor shifts, revealing a predatory instinct. They display a mix of playfulness and malice, taunting their victims before attacking. Abikus are known for their patience; they will wait for the perfect moment to strike, often following their prey for days before making a move. Their laughter, eerily echoing through the night, serves as both an invitation and a warning.

Habitat

Abikus thrive in warm, dense forests, where they can easily conceal themselves among the shadows and mist. They favor secluded areas, such as abandoned villages or areas with high child mortality rates, where they can access the life essence of their targets without drawing attention. The atmosphere in their habitats is thick with an unsettling stillness, often punctuated by the distant sounds of crying children or rustling leaves, creating an eerie sense of dread.

Modus Operandi

An Abiku primarily hunts small humanoids, particularly children, using its ability to possess the living. It begins by creating an emotional connection with its target, appearing as a harmless child or an innocent spirit. When close enough, it strikes with an incorporeal touch, attempting to drain the victim’s Constitution and weaken them. If successful, the Abiku can possess the body of its target, rendering them helpless while it siphons their life force. The creature’s ability to become invisible allows it to retreat or ambush when needed, making it a formidable predator in its domain.

Motivation

The primary motivation of an Abiku is the insatiable hunger for life essence. It seeks to replenish its own being and perpetuate its existence by preying on the vulnerable. This drive is compounded by a deeper, almost tragic aspect of its nature: the Abiku is trapped in a cycle of death and rebirth, drawn back to the mortal realm to cause suffering. This duality gives it a complex motivation; it acts out of both a primal instinct to survive and a cursed fate that compels it to haunt the living, embodying the sorrow and despair of those it targets.

Incorporeal Movement. The Abiku can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 1d10 force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.

Undead Nature. The Abiku does not require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Ethereal Jaunt. As a bonus action, the Abiku can magically shift from the Material Plane to the Ethereal Plane, or vice versa.

Actions

Multiattack. The Abiku makes two Incorporeal Touch attacks.

Incorporeal Touch. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 12 (2d6 + 3) necrotic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take an additional 1d6 Constitution damage. The target’s hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the Constitution damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. If a creature’s hit point maximum is reduced to 0 by this effect, it dies, and its body disintegrates into a shadowy mist.

Possession (Recharge 6). The Abiku targets one humanoid it can see within 5 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be possessed by the Abiku; the Abiku then disappears, and the target is incapacitated and loses control of its body. The Abiku now controls the body but doesn’t deprive the target of awareness. The Abiku can’t be targeted by any attack, spell, or other effect, except ones that turn undead, and it retains its alignment, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. It otherwise uses the possessed target’s statistics, but doesn’t gain access to the target’s knowledge, class features, or proficiencies.

The possession lasts until the body drops to 0 hit points, the Abiku ends it as a bonus action, or the Abiku is forced out by an effect like the dispel evil and good spell. When the possession ends, the Abiku reappears in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the body. The target is immune to this Abiku’s Possession for 24 hours after succeeding on the saving throw or after the possession ends.

Create Spawn. When a Small humanoid is reduced to 0 hit points by the Abiku’s Incorporeal Touch or Constitution drain, the humanoid rises 1d6 hours later as a new Abiku unless it is protected by a remove curse or greater restoration spell before that time. Abiku spawn retain none of their former memories or abilities in life and are fully under the command of the original Abiku.

Reactions

Escape Into Mist. When the Abiku is reduced to half of its hit points or fewer, it can use its reaction to dissolve into a cloud of black mist. While in mist form, the Abiku can move through any space as if it were air and is immune to all damage except radiant damage. The Abiku remains in this form for 1 minute, or until it chooses to revert to its normal form as a bonus action.

Tactics

  • Hit-and-Run Tactics: The Abiku often fights using guerrilla tactics, striking with its Incorporeal Touch and then using Ethereal Jaunt to phase into the Ethereal Plane, making it hard to pin down or corner.
  • Possession as a Distraction: When faced with multiple enemies, the Abiku may possess one, using them as a shield while causing confusion and panic among their allies. It waits for the right moment to strike vulnerable targets.
  • Weakening Over Time: The Abiku weakens its prey by repeatedly draining Constitution, reducing their ability to resist further attacks and gradually wearing them down before finishing them off.

Lair and Legendary Actions

The Abiku rarely has a specific lair, preferring to haunt warm, mist-filled forests. However, in places tied to death or ancient rituals, the Abiku gains the following lair actions:

Lair Actions (on Initiative count 20, losing initiative ties):

  • Fetid Mists: The jungle fills with a necrotic mist. Each creature within the lair must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) necrotic damage at the start of its turn while within the mist.
  • Phantom Whispers: The Abiku can make the voices of dead children echo through the jungle, imposing disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made by hostile creatures until the next lair action.

Legendary Actions (3/Turn):

  • Incorporeal Touch: The Abiku makes one Incorporeal Touch attack.
  • Ethereal Jaunt: The Abiku shifts to the Ethereal Plane and back again.
  • Drain Life (Costs 2 Actions): The Abiku forces one creature it can see within 30 feet to make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or suffer 1d4 Constitution damage.

Lore:

Abiku are evil spirits of children, born from curses or dark rituals, preying on the souls of the living. They dwell in warm forests, seeking small humanoids, particularly children, to drain and possess. Steeped in ancient malice, these creatures are masters of deceit, using possession and necrotic magic to weaken and destroy their prey from within. Their presence brings death and misfortune, and only powerful magic can banish them from the material world.

Combat

An abiku fights by attempting to touch and thus possess the nearest victim. If there are no Small humanoids to possess nearby, the abiku attempts to flee; however, it is still capable of using its incorporeal touch attack to defend itself if necessary.

Create Spawn (Su): Any Small humanoid slain by the abiku’s energy drain ability (see below) becomes an abiku himself 1d6 hours after death. Abiku spawn retain none of the abilities or memories of their former life.

Energy Damage (Su): An abiku’s touch deals 1d2 Constitution damage from any living creature unless the target succeeds at a Fortitude save (DC 11, Charisma based).

invisibility (Sp): An abiku can become invisible at will as per greater invisibility; thus it can attack without becoming visible.

Possession (Su): By successfully making a touch attack against a Small living humanoid, an abiku can attempt to possess its body. The target is allowed a Will save (DC 13, Charisma based); if this save fails, the abiku can physically enter and merge with the target creature’s body. If the save succeeds, the creature cannot be affected by the same abiku’s possession ability for the next 24 hours.

A possessed creature is considered helpless; not even the abiku can move or control the possessed creature. Every day the creature remains possessed by an abiku, it suffers 1d2 points of Constitution damage unless it succeeds at a Fortitude save (DC 11, Charisma based). An abiku may maintain possession of a body indefinitely, unless forced out. The abiku is automatically forced out of the host body once its Constitution reaches zero (at which point the host body dies).
