Wood Golem: The Guardian of the Whispering Grove

Wood Golem
Create

Appearance: A Wood Golem is a sight to behold. Standing at a towering 6-1/2 feet tall and weighing in at a hefty 400 pounds, this humanoid figure is crafted from a variety of rare woods. Each piece of lumber is carefully selected and assembled into a roughly humanoid body with articulated limbs. The creators of these golems often leave their bodies almost unfinished, adding to their rustic charm. Individual pieces of lumber and unworked wood are apparent and obvious as part of their construction, giving each golem a unique and distinctive look. Some are even made to look like living trees, complete with leaves, adding an element of surprise and camouflage to their design.

Behavior: Wood Golems are known for their strength and hardiness. They are typically calm and composed, carrying out their tasks with a steady determination. However, when threatened or damaged, they can enter a state of rage, fighting fiercely until they are either destroyed or fully repaired. Despite their wooden construction, they are surprisingly agile and capable of complex movements, thanks to their articulated limbs.

Habitat: Wood Golems can be found in a variety of environments, from dense forests to secluded groves. They are often seen serving as guardians for fey or druidic holy sites, blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Despite their size, they can be surprisingly hard to spot among the trees and foliage, especially those that have been designed to resemble living trees.

Modus Operandi: In situations of conflict, Wood Golems rely on their physical strength. They are capable of powerful slam attacks, using their hefty wooden limbs to deal significant damage to their opponents. Their wooden bodies can also launch a barrage of razor-sharp wooden splinters, serving as a ranged attack.

Motivation: Wood Golems are typically created to serve a specific purpose for their creators. They are often used to carry out laborious tasks, removing some of the drudgery of daily life. However, they can also serve as formidable guardians, protecting their creators or designated locations with unwavering loyalty and determination. Despite their seemingly simple construction, Wood Golems are complex creatures with a wide range of capabilities, making them a valuable asset in many situations.

Magic Resistance.
The golem has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Magic Weapons.
The golem’s weapon attacks are magical.

ACTIONS

Multiattack.
The wood golem makes two Slam attacks.

Slam.
Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Wood Barrage (Recharge 5-6).
The golem launches a barrage of razor-sharp wooden splinters from its body. Each creature within 20 feet of the golem must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d10) piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

TACTICS

  • Offensive Play: The Wood Golem is a powerful frontline combatant, using its Slam attacks to deal significant damage to individual targets. It can engage multiple enemies with Wood Barrage if surrounded or if its opponents attempt to overwhelm it with numbers.
  • Relentless Combatant: Once engaged in battle, the Wood Golem remains persistent, using its Wood Barrage to keep enemies at bay and its Slam to break through defense lines. It fights until either its enemies fall or it is destroyed.
  • Defensive Weakness: While it’s a formidable foe, being a construct made from wood, it is vulnerable to fire-based attacks. Opponents who exploit this weakness with flame spells or fire weapons could deal significant damage to the golem. Clever adventurers may choose to set the environment on fire to weaken or destroy the golem.

WEAKNESSES

Vulnerable to Fire.
Being made of wood, the golem has a natural weakness to fire. Fire-based attacks cause double damage to it. Opponents with access to flame-based magic or fire weapons should prioritize this weakness for maximum effectiveness in battle.

SUMMARY

The Wood Golem is a durable and powerful construct, designed to protect or defend a location using sheer physical might. It relies on its Slam attacks to crush foes and its Wood Barrage to deal with multiple opponents at once. While it is resilient against most forms of attack, its fire vulnerability provides a critical weakness for those clever enough to exploit it.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Immunity to Magic (Ex)   A wood golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows Spell Resistance, with the exception of spells and spell-like abilities that have the Fire descriptor, which affect it normally. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.   Warp wood or wood shape slows a wood golem (as the slow spell) for 2d6 rounds (no save).

Repel wood drives the golem back 60 feet and deals 2d12 points of damage to it (no save).

A magical attack that deals cold damage breaks any slow effect on the golem and heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points of damage the attack would otherwise deal. If the amount of healing would cause the golem to exceed its full normal hit points, it gains any excess as temporary hit points. A wood golem gets no saving throw against attacks that deal cold damage.

Splintering (Su) As a free action once every 1d4+1 rounds, a wood golem can launch a barrage of razor-sharp wooden splinters from its body in a 20-foot-radius burst. All creatures caught within this area take 6d6 points of slashing damage (Reflex DC 14 halves). The save DC is Constitution-based.
