(Dinosaur) Shantungosaurus, Titan of the Ancient Floodplains
“Towering over T. rex with the roar of a foghorn and the bulk of a tank, the Shantungosaurus is the ultimate herbivorous juggernaut your party never saw coming!”
This titanic duck-billed behemoth stands over three stories tall and stretches nearly 50 feet long. Its hide is a patchwork of thick, pebbly scales in earthy tones of moss-green and slate-gray, perfect for blending into the Cretaceous forests. A massive tail swings like a battering ram behind it, while its flattened snout — reminiscent of a giant scoop — is fringed with rows of grinding dental batteries. Along its back, a subtle ridge hints at a latent crest used in sonic resonance.
Behavior
Despite its monstrous size, the Shantungosaurus is a placid giant — unless provoked. Highly social, it moves in tightly-knit herds, communicating with subsonic bellows that can be felt through the ground before they’re heard. When threatened, it will not hesitate to stand its ground, using coordinated stampedes or devastating tail-swings to crush attackers.
Habitat
Native to dense floodplains and fern-choked lowlands, the Shantungosaurus thrives in wet, subtropical climates. It’s drawn to ancient river deltas, where rich vegetation blankets the ground and shallow waters provide both food and defensive terrain.
Modus Operandi
A Shantungosaurus is not a hunter — it is a walking fortress. When disturbed, it first lets out a reverberating warning bellow, causing birds to scatter and lesser creatures to flee. If that fails, it charges with surprising speed, trampling undergrowth — and enemies — with terrifying force. Its tail, weighing thousands of pounds, can shatter bone with a single swing.
Motivation
Pure survival and protection of the herd. Though unaligned, Shantungosaurus exhibits deep-rooted instinctual loyalty. Young are encircled during rest and migration. Any creature threatening a juvenile or disturbing the herd’s grazing ground will be met with swift, overwhelming force. It bears no malice — only unshakable defense.
“The forest shook like thunder was rolling through the trees. And then it emerged… not a dragon, but a living mountain with eyes like stone and a voice that split the earth.”
— Seraphine, Ranger of the Jade Plains

Traits
Herd Instinct. While within 30 feet of another Shantungosaurus or allied beast, the Shantungosaurus has advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.
Massive Frame. The Shantungosaurus counts as difficult terrain for all creatures of Large size or smaller attempting to move through its space.
Thunderous Bellow (Recharge 5–6). The Shantungosaurus emits a deep, resonant roar that shakes the ground. Each creature within 60 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or be deafened until the end of their next turn and suffer disadvantage on attack rolls against creatures other than the Shantungosaurus until the end of their next turn. Creatures with the Keen Hearing trait make this saving throw with disadvantage.
Trampling Momentum. If the Shantungosaurus moves at least 20 feet in a straight line and ends its movement within 5 feet of a creature, it can make a Stomp attack as a bonus action. If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Actions
Multiattack. The Shantungosaurus makes two attacks: one with its Stomp and one with its Tail Swipe.
Stomp. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is prone, it takes an additional 10 (2d10) damage.
Tail Swipe. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 33 (6d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and pushed 10 feet away.
Crushing Walk (Recharge 6). The Shantungosaurus moves up to its speed in a straight line. It can move through spaces of creatures Large or smaller, making a Stomp attack against each creature it moves through. Those creatures must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone and take an additional 14 (4d6) bludgeoning damage.
Tactics
The Shantungosaurus is a peaceful giant that avoids combat unless provoked or protecting its herd. When threatened, it begins with a Thunderous Bellow to disorient foes and assert dominance. It uses its Trampling Momentum to scatter smaller enemies and Crushing Walk to forcefully move through groups of foes. It relies on Tail Swipe to keep attackers at a distance and Stomp to crush vulnerable targets. It prioritizes protecting young or injured herd members, using its bulk to block access.
Environmental Role
In prehistoric or primeval settings, the Shantungosaurus serves as a defensive herd guardian, a natural hazard during migrations, a dangerous but non-hostile encounter when panicked, or as a boss creature in a hunt-the-beast scenario.
Variant: Matriarch Shantungosaurus (CR 13)

- Tail Slam (1/turn): Repeat Tail Swipe
- Roaring Command (Costs 2 Actions): A friendly beast within 60 feet may immediately move or make an attack

SPECIAL TRAITS
- Trampling Charge. If the Hadrosaur moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hits that creature with a Ram attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength check or be knocked prone. If the target is knocked prone, the Hadrosaur may make one Stomp attack against it as a bonus action.
ACTIONS
- Ram. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage.
- Stomp. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one prone creature. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage.
ABOUT
A generally placid and peaceful grazer of grass and ferns, the Hadrosaur is a danger only in large numbers. Shy, these creatures prefer to avoid trouble. However, each herd keeps several of its number on lookout. When danger threatens, the herd bunches together, placing young and pregnant females in the center. If the threat attacks, the herd attempts to move away en masse, but this direction is always away from the first threat and might lead to them trampling other hunters or running into a more dangerous situation.

Shantungosaurus

This massive hadrosaur stands 20 feet tall, measures 50 feet long, and weighs approximately 8 tons.
Shantungosaurus is one of the longest and largest hadrosaurids. Like all hadrosaurs its beak was toothless, but its jaws were packed with around 1,500 tiny chewing teeth. A large hole near its nostrils may have been covered by a loose flap, which could be inflated to make sounds.
