Leucrotta: The Bone-Crushing Mimic of the Wastes That Laughs With a Human Voice

Leucrotta: The Bone-Crushing Mimic of the Wastes That Laughs With a Human Voice
Created with Chat Gpt

The leucrotta resembles a gaunt, long-limbed hyena stretched to unnatural proportions, standing as tall as a warhorse at the shoulder. Its hide is coarse and mottled in dusty reds and sickly ochres, blending seamlessly with scrubland and rocky badlands. The creature’s most unsettling feature is its mouth: a single continuous ridge of bone plates in place of individual teeth, forming a crushing, serrated vice capable of biting through shields. Its jaws hinge wide, and when it “speaks,” its lips pull back in a grotesque parody of a grin. Eyes burn with unsettling intelligence, and its ears twitch constantly, ever listening.

Behaviour

Leucrottas are cunning, observant, and disturbingly patient. They shadow caravans and adventuring parties for miles, studying speech patterns and emotional tones. Though solitary hunters, they display calculated restraint, often waiting until dusk or during exhaustion to strike. Their laughter—half human, half carrion beast—echoes across the wasteland to unnerve and isolate targets.

Habitat

Leucrottas thrive in arid badlands, rocky savannahs, desolate moors, and wind-carved canyons. They prefer open terrain where sound travels clearly, allowing them to mimic voices across distance. A leucrotta’s territory can span dozens of miles, marked by scattered bones gnawed clean and stripped of marrow.

Modus Operandi

Masters of vocal mimicry, leucrottas lure prey by imitating a wounded traveler, a lost child, or even a companion’s voice. Once a victim is separated from allies, the creature bursts from concealment with shocking speed. Its crushing bite targets limbs first, shattering bone to disable escape. Leucrottas drag kills to secluded feeding grounds and consume nearly everything—armor straps, leather, bone—leaving little trace behind.

Motivation

Driven primarily by hunger and territorial instinct, leucrottas also exhibit a cruel streak of predatory curiosity. They delight in confusion and fear, using mimicry not merely as a hunting tool but as psychological torment. A leucrotta values survival, dominance of its range, and the steady accumulation of carcasses within its domain.

Traits

  • Bone-Crushing Jaws. The leucrotta’s bite counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. When the leucrotta deals damage to an object or structure with its bite, that damage is doubled.
  • Mimic Voice. The leucrotta can perfectly imitate animal sounds and the voice and speech patterns of any humanoid it has heard for at least 1 minute. A creature that hears the imitation can tell it is an imitation with a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Insight) check. The leucrotta cannot produce clear speech while biting or howling.
  • Unnerving Laughter (Recharge 5–6). The leucrotta releases a hideous, echoing laugh. Each creature of its choice within 30 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of the leucrotta until the end of its next turn. A creature that fails the save by 5 or more is also knocked prone as panic overtakes it.
  • Territorial Ambusher. The leucrotta has advantage on initiative rolls and on attack rolls against surprised creatures.

Spellcasting (Innate).

It’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 14, +6 to hit with spell attacks). It requires no components.

  • At will: minor illusion (auditory only), thaumaturgy
  • 3/day each: dissonant whispers (cast at 2nd level), mirror image
  • 1/day each: fear, major image

Actions

  • Multiattack. It makes two attacks: one with its Bite and one with its Claw.
  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
    Hit: 19 (2d10 + 4) piercing damage.
If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer a Crushed Limb. Crushed Limb. The target’s speed is reduced by 10 feet and it has disadvantage on Strength-based ability checks until it receives magical healing or finishes a short or long rest.
  • Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
    Hit: 12 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.
  • Luring Cry (Recharge 4–6). The leucrotta speaks in a perfectly mimicked voice. One creature of the leucrotta’s choice within 60 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or use its reaction to move up to its speed toward a space the leucrotta designates. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

Reaction

  • Mocking Feint. When a creature the leucrotta can see misses it with an attack, the leucrotta can impose disadvantage on that creature’s next attack roll before the end of its next turn as it distracts the attacker with sudden mimicry or a malicious chuckle.

Legendary Actions (Optional variant for solo/boss encounters)

The leucrotta can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn.

  • Shift. The leucrotta moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Mocking Whisper. One creature within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next saving throw before the end of its next turn.
  • Savage Bite (Costs 2 Actions). The leucrotta makes one Bite attack.

Tactics

  • Pre-combat. The leucrotta stalks from concealment, learning voices and tones. It uses minor illusion (auditory) and Mimic Voice to lure scouts and stragglers away from a party’s main body.
  • Opening. If it can, it opens with Luring Cry or major image to fracture formations and separate spellcasters or lightly armored characters. If surprises are possible it benefits from its Territorial Ambusher trait.
  • Combat. It uses Multiattack to focus a single target (preferably isolated or already disoriented), aiming to apply Crushed Limb to cripple mobility. It may follow a kill with Rampage-style pursuit (noted in flavor) or use Mirror Image/fear to disrupt enemy focus. Unnerving Laughter is saved for moments when foes cluster or to break morale.
  • Fallback. If heavily damaged, the leucrotta uses its speed and Shift (legendary or tactical movement) to break line of sight and reset the hunt, relying on mimicry to confuse pursuers.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Lure (Su)

At any point that a leucrotta’s targets are unaware of it (for example, if the leucrotta is hiding or concealed in darkness), the leucrotta can call out to the targets, who must be in line of sight and within 60 feet. When the leucrotta calls out, the targets must make a DC 16 Will save or fall under the effects of a suggestion to approach the sound of the leucrotta’s voice.

This effect functions identically to a mass suggestion spell with a caster level equal to the leucrotta’s Hit Dice. A creature that saves cannot be affected again by the same leucrotta’s lure for 24 hours. The lure is a language-dependent effect, and if the leucrotta uses the victim’s name during the lure, the victim takes a –4 penalty on its saving throw. This is a sonic mind-affecting charm effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Powerful Bite (Ex)

A leucrotta’s bite attack always applies 1-1/2 times its Strength modifier on damage rolls and threatens a critical hit on a roll of 19–20. When a leucrotta bites an object, its bite treats the object as having a hardness of 5 less than the object’s actual hardness rating.

Reputed to be descended from hyenas and a demon lord, these creatures are intelligent and cruel, using their astounding vocal mimicry to lure foolish and unsuspecting creatures to where the pack can torment them at its leisure before finally devouring them.

Five feet tall at the shoulder, its tawny fur often coated with dried and clotted filth, its a powerful beast weighing over 800 pounds. The sharp bone ridges that line its oversized jaws instead of teeth are incredibly durable and, combined with massive jaw muscles, allow its bite to shear through bone and even steel. Leucrottas consume their prey gear and all; they vomit up what they cannot digest and pick through the debris in search of valuable items that might help them lure in prey.

They sometimes lead packs of gnolls, or even of their bestial cousins the crocottas. They refuse to let themselves be used as beasts of burden, but sometimes allow favored gnoll companions to ride them into battle as steeds. The leucrotta in a gnoll pack generally thinks of itself as the leader of that group, and treats any established gnoll chieftain poorly in an attempt to goad that gnoll into attacking it. Those leucrottas that succeed in slaying a gnoll leader typically find it much easier to assume the role of tribal leader.

Traits

Keen Smell. The leucrotta has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Kicking Retreat. If the leucrotta makes a hooves attack, it can take the Disengage action as a bonus action.

Mimicry. The leucrotta can mimic animal sounds and humanoid voices it has heard. A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 14 Wisdom (Insight) check.

Rampage. When the leucrotta reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack on its turn, it can take a bonus action to move up to half its speed and make a hooves attack.

Actions

Multiattack. It makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its hooves.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) piercing damage. If the leucrotta scores a critical hit, it rolls the damage dice three times instead of twice.

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Tactics

Leucrottas are opportunistic ambushers that stalk from cover and use Mimicry to lure isolated prey. In combat, they often:

  • Open by mimicking cries or voices to sow confusion and separate foes.
  • Exploit mobility, using their 50-ft. speed to flank and retreat when pressured.
  • Use Rampage to pursue fallen foes or reposition quickly.
  • Favor hit-and-run tactics unless cornered, relying on Kicking Retreat to disengage safely.

Their low Charisma and simplistic aggression make them challenging rather than strategically deep opponents, ideal for mid-level wilderness encounters.
