Eer-moonan: The Human-Footed Pack Hunter of the Wilds
A quill-snouted wilderness stalker that walks on human feet and hunts in eerie, coordinated packs.

The Eer-moonan is a rare and unsettling chimera whispered of in frontier lore—a lean canine predator with the spined snout of an echidna and disturbingly human feet. Moving silently through scrublands and shadowed forests, these creatures stalk prey with patient intelligence, often hunting in small packs that coordinate ambushes with uncanny precision. Their presence is most often discovered by the strange tracks they leave behind: animal prints suddenly giving way to the barefoot steps of something disturbingly human.
Lore
“Dog tracks are trouble enough—but if they turn into a woman’s footprints, you’re already dead.”
Among isolated communities and wandering hunters, the Eer-moonan is spoken of with quiet dread. Travelers tell of unseen predators shadowing them for miles through the bush, their presence betrayed only by fleeting shapes between the trees and the unsettling discovery of human-like footprints alongside animal tracks.
Some scholars believe the creatures are manifestations of ancient wilderness spirits, predators born from the land itself to punish those who trespass upon sacred ground. Others insist they are cursed beasts or unnatural hybrids—creatures twisted long ago by magic, misfortune, or forgotten rites.
Appearance
An Eer-moonan resembles a gaunt wild dog roughly the size of a large wolf, though its proportions are subtly wrong. Its lean body is covered in coarse dark fur, broken by bands of stiff quills along the spine and shoulders that can bristle when the creature is threatened.
Its head narrows into a long, tubular echidna-like snout tipped with a moist, sensitive nose capable of detecting prey at great distance. Small black eyes gleam with unsettling awareness beneath a crown of short defensive spines.
Most disturbing are its feet. Instead of paws, the Eer-moonan possesses human-like female feet, narrow and pale, with long flexible toes. These allow it to move quietly across nearly any terrain, leaving tracks that resemble those of a barefoot person walking beside animal prints.
Behaviour
Eer-moonan are intelligent ambush predators that rely on patience and coordination rather than brute strength. Packs typically consist of three to six individuals that communicate through subtle body language and quiet chittering sounds.
They rarely rush prey immediately. Instead, they observe, stalk, and isolate targets—sometimes following travelers or herds for hours before committing to an attack.
When threatened, Eer-moonan become fiercely aggressive, bristling their quills and striking with sudden bursts of speed.
Habitat
Eer-moonan inhabit remote wilderness regions where human presence is rare—dry scrublands, rocky uplands, open woodlands, and deep forests.
They favor territories with abundant hiding places such as stone outcrops, dense root systems, and abandoned burrows. Packs maintain wide hunting ranges and are highly territorial, driving away rival predators.
Modus Operandi
Eer-moonan hunt through carefully coordinated ambush tactics. A pack will silently shadow its prey from multiple directions, gradually steering the target into vulnerable terrain such as narrow paths, rocky gullies, or thick undergrowth.
Once the attack begins, the creatures strike simultaneously—one attempting to hamstring or topple the prey while another lunges for the throat. Their long snouts can jab forward like spears, delivering quick puncturing strikes before the killing bite.
The pack retreats just as swiftly if the prey proves too dangerous, preferring to wait for weakness rather than risk injury.
Motivation
At its core, the Eer-moonan is driven by predatory instinct and territorial control. However, its eerie intelligence and strange anatomy suggest a deeper purpose.
Many sages believe these creatures serve as living wardens of ancient wilderness, instinctively targeting those who trespass too deeply into untamed lands.
Others fear a darker truth—that the Eer-moonan is the result of a long-forgotten curse, a predator forever suspended between human and beast.
Ecology
Despite their carnivorous nature, Eer-moonan are opportunistic feeders. When large prey is scarce, they dig for insects, grubs, and burrowing creatures using their long snouts, much like the echidnas they resemble.
Their dens are usually concealed burrows or hollowed earth beneath rock shelves and tangled roots. Within these lairs lie scattered bones and fur—evidence of both animal and humanoid prey.
Packs are typically led by a dominant female, whose tracks often appear most human-like and whose territory markings are strongest.
Signs of Presence
Adventurers traveling through Eer-moonan territory might notice:
- Bare human footprints appearing alongside animal tracks
- Small burrow entrances surrounded by bones and fur
- Strange clicking or chittering noises echoing at night
- Livestock or wildlife found with precise throat wounds and little sign of struggle
Scholars & Rumours
The origin of the Eer-moonan remains a subject of heated debate among naturalists and folklorists. Some insist the creatures are spirit-born guardians tied to ancient wilderness traditions. Others argue they are magical aberrations created by forgotten rituals or curses.
A more unsettling theory suggests the creatures were once human hunters transformed into beasts, their lingering humanity betrayed only by the footprints they can never fully hide.

Reactions
Quill Flare.
When a creature misses the Eer-moonan with a melee attack within 5 feet, the Eer-moonan bristles its spines. The attacker must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 4 (1d8) piercing damage.
Ecology & Behavior
Eer-moonan dwell in remote wilderness—scrublands, rocky highlands, and dense forests. They lair in burrows beneath roots, rocks, or abandoned dens.
They are pack predators (3–6 individuals, led by a dominant female) that stalk prey silently for hours before striking. The human-like feet allow them to leave unsettling tracks, making travelers uneasy.
Eer-moonan are opportunistic: primarily carnivorous but will dig for insects or burrowing animals when prey is scarce. They prefer crippling and disorienting prey before delivering a killing blow.

Hamstring (Ex)
An eer-moonan can rake at a creature’s legs once per round as part of a full attack. The target must succeed at a DC 15 Reflex save or have its base land speed reduced by 10 feet for 1d4 rounds. Creatures immune to critical hits are immune to this effect. The save DC is Strength-based.

Eer-moonan are unusual blood-drinking predators of swamps and lakes. Much like a hippopotamus, they are capable of walking along the bottom of waterways as well as swimming. They are intelligent despite their bestial appearance, and have a disturbing fondness for the blood of humanoid prey. Marshes home to a group of eer-moonan often lack humanoid species such as boggards and lizardfolk, and even larger predators steer clear of these prowling monsters. They are ambush predators, making up for their ponderous movements with surprisingly soft footfalls. Eer-moonan never use weapons or armor—their hands lack opposable thumbs, and they are incapable of using tools.
They are highly social creatures. Their groups consist of a few mated pairs, their adult offspring and a few unmated, unrelated individuals that have joined from other pods. They are seemingly capable of forming long-lasting friendships between one another, and the slayer of an eer-moonan may find himself the victim of ever-escalating retribution from its peers.
Eer-moonan young are highly dependent on their parents for several years. They nest in muddy holes on shorelines; the young are left behind while the parents hunt. Upon returning, the parents regurgitate up a bloody feast for their offspring. Eer-moonan can live for up to two centuries if disease and violence do not take their toll, and they reproduce infrequently during their lifetimes. An eer-moonan stands about four feet tall and weighs 150 pounds.
