Slide-rock Bolter

Slide-rock Bolter
My Images (midjourney.com)

The Slide-rock Bolter is a monstrous creature, boasting a massive and elongated body resembling a hybrid between a serpent and a colossal fish. Its skin is thick and rugged, mottled with hues of deep earth tones, blending seamlessly with the rocky terrain of its habitat. Towering over its prey, its broad head is adorned with sharp, jagged teeth, capable of tearing through flesh with ease. Its eyes gleam with a predatory intelligence, always scanning for its next victim.

Behavior: This mythical beast is solitary by nature, lurking within the secluded depths of the mountainous landscape it calls home. Patient and cunning, the Slide-rock Bolter lies in wait, its movements as slow and deliberate as the shifting of tectonic plates. Despite its gargantuan size, it possesses a remarkable ability to remain hidden amongst the rocky crags until the opportune moment arises to strike.

Habitat: The Slide-rock Bolter is indigenous to the rugged expanse of the Rocky Mountains, where sheer cliffs and treacherous slopes provide the perfect hunting grounds. It favors remote and inaccessible locations, far removed from human civilization, where it can roam undisturbed amidst the towering peaks and winding valleys.

Modus Operandi: When the Slide-rock Bolter detects the presence of unsuspecting travelers below, it unleashes its devastating attack. With a thunderous roar, it dislodges itself from the precipice, hurtling downward in a terrifying avalanche of rock and sinew. Its descent is swift and unstoppable, as it descends upon its prey with unparalleled ferocity, crushing them beneath its massive bulk before devouring them whole.

Motivation: Driven by an insatiable hunger, the Slide-rock Bolter’s motivation is simple yet primal – to feed and survive. In the harsh and unforgiving landscape of the Rocky Mountains, where resources are scarce and competition is fierce, it must rely on its predatory instincts to sustain itself. Each unsuspecting traveler that crosses its path becomes another meal in its relentless quest for sustenance.

Keen Smell. The Slide-rock Bolter has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Mountain Camouflage. The Slide-rock Bolter has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in rocky terrain.

Rock Slide. As a bonus action, the Slide-rock Bolter can dislodge rocks and debris from its surroundings, creating difficult terrain in a 30-foot radius centered on itself. Creatures within the area must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 4d8 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone, or half as much damage on a successful save and not be knocked prone.

Multiattack. The Slide-rock Bolter makes two attacks: one with its Bite and one with its Tail Slap.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (3d10 + 6) piercing damage.

Tail Slap. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Avalanche Strike (Recharge 5-6). The Slide-rock Bolter leaps from a height of at least 60 feet onto a point it can see within 60 feet of it. Each creature in a 20-foot radius sphere centered on that point must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 42 (6d12) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one and not be knocked prone.

Actions

Swallow. The Slide-rock Bolter makes one bite attack against a Large or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the Slide-rock Bolter, and it takes 28 (8d6) acid damage at the start of each of the Slide-rock Bolter’s turns. If the Slide-rock Bolter takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the Slide-rock Bolter must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the swallowed creature, which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the Slide-rock Bolter. If the Slide-rock Bolter dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse using 15 feet of movement, exiting prone.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the Slide-rock Bolter’s choice within 120 feet of it and aware of it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a target’s saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the target is immune to the Slide-rock Bolter’s Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Legendary Actions

The Slide-rock Bolter can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The Slide-rock Bolter regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Attack. The Slide-rock Bolter makes one attack with its Bite or Tail Slap.

Rock Toss (Costs 2 Actions). The Slide-rock Bolter hurls a large rock at a creature it can see within 60 feet of it. The target must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 16 (3d10) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Rockslide (Costs 3 Actions). The Slide-rock Bolter creates a massive rockslide in a 60-foot cone originating from itself. Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The area becomes difficult terrain until cleared.

Description: Towering over its surroundings, the Slide-rock Bolter is a nightmarish creature of immense size and power. Its elongated form blends seamlessly with the rocky terrain, making it nearly indistinguishable until it strikes. With its razor-sharp teeth and powerful tail, it can swiftly dispatch any who dare to traverse its mountainous domain. Those unlucky enough to encounter the Slide-rock Bolter find themselves at the mercy of its relentless onslaught, facing certain doom beneath its crushing weight. Only the most skilled and courageous adventurers stand a chance against this formidable foe.

This enormous creature resembles a caricature of a whale—it is mostly mouth attached to a slug-like body. Its tail ends in a single immense pincer.

Taken from the Creature Codex

A slide-rock bolter’s scale beggars the imagination. This massive creature is about 100 feet long and weighs 250 tons. Its territory encompasses an entire mountain or mountain range, where it lies in wait for its prey. Despite its size, a slide-rock bolter needs to eat only once a month or so, and a man-sized meal is sufficient enough to sustain it. It does enjoy being better fed, however, and entire herds of wildlife or settlements of people can disappear down its gaping maw.

In combat, a slide-rock bolter is a match even for giants and dragons. Its body is coated in a thick layer of rock that protects it from all but the mightiest blows, and it is capable of swallowing even enormous creatures whole in the blink of an eye. Slide-rock bolters are ambush predators, hiding in plain sight as a cliff side or mass of boulders before launching themselves over their prey. Any enemies not killed outright by its bulk or devoured are picked off by its mighty jaws and clawed tail. Opponents that harass it from a distance are pelted with hurled boulders.

Silde-rock bolters are fortunately rare and solitary creatures. They reproduce asexually and only upon death—when a slide-rock bolter is slain, a geode-like stone inside its head begins to transform into an egg, which hatches a horse-sized baby bolter. Where the first slide-rock bolters came from is a mystery, although many sages suspect the Elemental Plane of Earth as an origin.

Special Abilities

  • Crushing Trample (Ex) Any creature that fails a Reflex save against a slide-rock bolter’s trample, or that forgoes the save in order to make an attack of opportunity, must succeed a DC 37 Fortitude save or be knocked prone and stunned for 1d4 rounds. The save is Strength based.
  • Dispelling Bite (Su) A creature bitten by a slide-rock bolter is affected by a greater dispel magic at CL 20th. This effect first targets spells and effects that prevent or protect against grappling, and then affects other spells as normal.
  • Gobble (Ex) When using its crushing trample ability, a slide-rock bolter can make a bite attack against any creature within its reach as a swift action. If it makes an attack against a creature that has taken damage from its trample, it gains a +4 bonus on the attack roll.
  • Massive Movement (Ex) Because a slide-rock bolter is so massive, uneven ground and other terrain features that form difficult terrain generally pose no significant hindrance to a slide-rock bolter’s movement, though areas of forest or settlements are considered difficult terrain to it.
  • Mighty Hurl (Ex) A slide-rock bolter uses its Strength score instead of its Dexterity score to modify its rock attack.
  • Reinforced Guts (Ex) A creature swallowed by a slide-rock bolter must deal damage equal to 1/5th the slide-rock bolter’s hp in order to cut its way out.
  • Sprint (Ex) Once per hour, a slide-rock bolter can move at ten times its base speed. It can use its crushing trample ability in conjunction with sprint.
