Nisse
Discover the Nisse secretive, mischievous creatures that can bring fortune—or chaos—to your farm!
The Nisse is a small, gnome-like creature from Scandinavian folklore, typically standing about a foot tall with a stocky build. It has a white beard, twinkling eyes, and wears simple grey woolen clothing topped with a signature red hat that grants it the power of invisibility. A faint scent of hay and animals often lingers around it, reflecting its close connection to farm life.
Nisse are both benevolent and mischievous by nature. They diligently protect the livestock and care for the household they adopt, often performing unseen tasks like feeding animals, repairing tools, and ensuring a good harvest. However, if the family mistreats the animals or neglects the farm, they may play tricks, hide belongings, or spoil food to teach them a lesson. If ignored, they may even lead the animals away to a better home.
Nisse live on farms, particularly in barns or stables, where they feel most connected to the animals and the land. They prefer rural areas, especially in colder climates, and are most prevalent in the northern regions of Scandinavia.
Their modus operandi is one of secrecy and subtlety. They operate invisibly, influencing the farm’s success through their hidden actions. Their motivation stems from a deep sense of duty to protect and care for the land and its creatures, rewarding kindness and punishing cruelty to ensure harmony between humans and nature. A Nisse’s loyalty can be secured with simple offerings, like a bowl of porridge with cinnamon, which they find irresistible.

- Tiny Dagger. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage.
- Hurl Acorn. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage. On a hit, the target must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.

Mischief Ploy (Recharge 5-6). The Nisse can create a harmless illusion (as per the minor illusion cantrip) or cause a small, localized phenomenon like making a door creak, a small object disappear, or the sound of footsteps to come from another direction. Any creature that witnesses this must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be distracted, losing its reaction until the start of its next turn.
Reactions
Trickster’s Dodge. When an attacker that the Nisse can see hits it with an attack, it can use its reaction to halve the attack’s damage against it.
Tactics
- Guerrilla Tactics: The Nisse relies on its invisibility and stealth to harry opponents with hit-and-run tactics. It avoids direct confrontation, instead using its environment and illusions to confuse and disorient foes.
- Animal Allies: In a fight, the Nisse may rally nearby animals to distract or overwhelm its enemies, using its Animal Empathy to gain their assistance.
- Flee to Fight Another Day: The Nisse is not above retreating if outmatched, using its Nimble Escape and Invisible Presence to slip away unnoticed and live to protect its home another day.
The Nisse is a creature of cunning and subtlety, more inclined to defend its territory through misdirection and sabotage than direct combat. It will fight to protect its adopted home and its inhabitants, using its unique blend of magic and trickery to outmaneuver and outwit any who threaten it.

(Nisses are portrayed in two different ways in Scandinavian culture/mythology. They replace the elves as the helpers of Santa Claus and are also known to live among humans. The ones that work for Santa Claus are generally considered to be human-sized, though they average from 4 feet up, while the ones that live among humans are usually portrayed as being a foot high at most – this particular version represents the latter).

Animal Affinity nisses have a special affinity with domesticated animals, granting it a +8 racial bonus to Handle Animal and Heal checks regarding domesticated animals. Furthermore, a nisse can use wild empathy as a druid, but only in regards to domesticated animals.
Hat of invisibility A nisse has possession of a hat of invisibility, which is only usable by the nisse to whom the hat belongs. The hat of invisibility functions as a ring of invisibility.
Nisses are fey creatures, who have adopted humanoid families who live on farms, and who seek to protect the livestock from predators as well as from the humanoids themselves. They are especially prevalent in the northern regions of Golarion, seemingly having a particular affinity for the superstitious Ulfen.
Generally, nisses will assist the humanoids in unseen ways, such as by healing animals, ensuring that plants and animals are kept watered and fed, but should the humanoids purposefully mistreat the animals, then nisses are not above playing practical jokes and tricks on the farmers. Should the families fail to understand the reason for the jokes, the nisses will eventually free the animals and lead them to better families.
Should the farmer repent his ways, it is customary for them to leave out porridge with cinnamon topping, as nisses find this irresistible. Nisses who are given this treat often will remain remarkably loyal to their families, often helping out (unseen) in animal breeding programs and making sure that only the best plant stock is used for seeds.
It is considered good luck to have a nisse living on your farm in most regions, and even more so to actually see one. However, it is considered bad luck in those regions to have the nisse leave the farm and this has on occasion lead to superstitious farmers leaving their farms behind.
