Conrad II Reiz of Breuberg the founder of the free imperial Barony of Frankenstein built the castle on a hilltop in the Odenwald overlooking the city of Kassel.
A dangerous lindworm lives in the Odenwald near the castle well. Peasants of a neighboring village live in fear as it creeps in at night and eat the villagers and their children in their sleep.
Hidden behind the herb garden of the castle, there is a fountain of youth. In the first full-moon night after Walpurgis Night old women from the nearby villages undergo tests of courage. The one who is successful is rejuvenated to the age she was on the night of her wedding.
