feat Ride-By Attack

Ride-By Attack (General)

This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.

Prerequisites: Ride 1 rank, Mounted Combat.

Benefit: When you are mounted and use the charge action, you may move and attack as if with a standard charge and then move again (continuing the straight line of the charge). Your total movement for the round can’t exceed double your mounted speed. You and your mount do not provoke an attack of opportunity from the opponent that you attack.

Special: A fighter may select Ride-By Attack as one of his fighter bonus feats.

How Ride-By Attack Changes a Charge

Ride-By Attack lets a mounted character continue moving after making the attack in a charge. The movement still follows the straight line of the charge, and the total distance moved during the round cannot exceed twice the mount’s speed. The rider and mount also avoid attacks of opportunity from the opponent that the rider attacks during that charge.

Ride-By Attack Example

A horse with a speed of 50 feet can cover up to 100 feet during the charge. The rider might move 40 feet to reach an enemy, make the charge attack, then continue another 60 feet along the same line. The feat does not allow arbitrary turns during the charge, and its protection from attacks of opportunity applies to the opponent being attacked rather than every creature on the battlefield.

Why Mounted Characters Take It

  • It keeps a mounted attacker moving instead of ending the charge beside the target.
  • It works naturally with Mounted Combat, which is one of its prerequisites.
  • It rewards fast mounts and open battlefields where a straight charge lane can be maintained.

See the Feats index for more mounted and combat options.
