Benefit: You get a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at ranges of up to 30 feet.

Special: A fighter may select Point Blank Shot as one of his fighter bonus feats.

How Point Blank Shot Works

Point Blank Shot rewards fighting at short range. When a target is within 30 feet, the feat adds +1 to both the ranged attack roll and the weapon’s damage roll. Once the target is farther than 30 feet away, those bonuses no longer apply.

Point Blank Shot Example

An archer fires at an enemy 25 feet away and gains the +1 bonus to the attack roll and damage roll. If the same enemy moves to 35 feet away before the next shot, Point Blank Shot provides no bonus to that attack. Measuring the distance to the target is therefore part of using the feat well.

Why Characters Take It

  • It improves accuracy and damage at the ranges where many dungeon and skirmish encounters take place.
  • It applies to ranged weapons rather than being tied to one specific bow, crossbow or thrown weapon.
  • It is a prerequisite for important ranged options such as Precise Shot.

Related Rules

Point Blank Shot does not remove penalties for firing into melee. That is the role of Precise Shot. See the Feats index for the wider ranged-combat feat chain.
