Sash: A sash is a type of band or ribbon, worn either around the waist or over the shoulder. While sometimes merely decorative, the sash is also often used as a symbol of rank or office. Sashes can be very symbolic, representing how power and authority are ‘tied together’ in the wearer. A sash can also be used to symbolize the continuity of certain orders or offices, being passed down to a successor during a ritualistic inauguration ceremony. Various materials are used, but the most common is silk.
