Quasar (real name Wendell Elvis Vaughn) is a fictional character, a comic book superhero in the Marvel Comics universe. He is one of Marvel’s cosmic heroes, a character whose adventures frequently take him into outer space or other dimensions. However, Quasar deviates from the archetype of the noble, dauntless alien set by such silver-age cosmic heroes as the Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock, and Captain Mar-Vell in that he is an everyman. He starred in an eponymous monthly ongoing series written by Mark Gruenwald that ran for sixty issues beginning in 1989, and has served as a member of The Avengers.

Fearless 

Quasar is immune to fear.

Quantum Bands: The Quantum Bands are immensely powerful cosmic objects used primarily by the designated Protector of the Universe. They are fused to Vaughn’s wrists empowering him directly with their might. Below are listed some of the more common uses of the bands, however this does not begin to cover all the possibilities.

The bands are powered by a Concentration check using the wielder’s Charisma modifier rather than Constitution. Any feats that modify the wielder’s Will save also add their bonus to this Concentration check. Vaughn may take 10 on a Concentration check to wield the bands, even under stressful situations.

The following effects are always active as long as the bands are worn around the wrist:

  • +20 deflection bonus to armor class
  • +20 bonus to saves
  • Fly speed 4,000 ft. (perfect)
  • 50% fortification find the path (in regards to cosmic beings and energy signatures) at will tongues at will
  • The wielder is able to survive in any environment without suffering detrimental effects including the vacuum of space. They must still eat, drink, and sleep however.
  • The wielder adds his Charisma modifier to all attack and damage rolls.
  • Unarmed strikes can deal lethal or nonlethal damage, and deal +2d6 force damage.

Construct 

The bands form a energy construct based around the wielder’s choosing. This construct may be in the form of any creature though Quasar normally creatures only non-sentient objects such as weapons, armor, or cages. (See ‘Creating a Green Lantern Ring construct and use the same stats’) One must partially concentrate on these constructs to keep them active. The wielder suffers a -2 penalty to his Concentration checks while he has a construct active. One can create numerous constructs, although successive creations will obviously be weaker than the first. Alternatively, the bearer may attempt to create more than one construct at a time, but he suffers a -1 cumulative penalty to his Concentration checks for each construct beyond the first created at one time. Creating a construct is a standard action.

Cosmic Link 

The bands allow a direct link to Epoch and her nascent omniscience, which can be accessed by its bearer. Epoch makes all Knowledge checks with a +50 modifier. It also can provide a +20 competence bonus to all non-Knowledge mental skill checks as a swift action. (Except Concentration checks to use the bands)

The Quantum Bands can also be programmed to react to certain conditions and make the wearer aware if they ever occur. In the past Quasar surrounded the Earth with an invisible energy field. The energy field could detect any surges of exotic energy emanating from the planet’s surface as well as if any object larger than a micrometeorite passed through it; in either case the field would react by transmitting an alert signal to the quantum bands.

Energy Absorption

The Quantum Bands automatically absorb harmful levels of energy directed at him. He can absorb any energy other then darkforce and magical energy. He can redirect any energy he absorbs sending it at a target of his choosing in place of his normal attack. He can hold absorbed energy for up to 10 minutes before it dissipates.

Energy Control 

Quasar can exert control of all energy within the electromagnetic spectrum at an undisclosed ranged but approaching several thousand miles. No limit has yet been shown to what he can control. Quasar in the past has exerted control over the sun causing it to emit a solar flare to specifications of his choosing then revert to normal.

Psionic Immunity 

Quasar has used the Quantum Bands to rend himself immune to mind control. He has been dominated only once when Morgan Le Fey used the reality altering powers of the Scarlet Witch to alter the very fabric of dimensions.

Quantum Blast 

The band fires a powerful blast of energy. This blast is a ray with a range equal to the Concentration check x100 feet. The blast deals one half the Concentration check d6 damage. This damage may be quantum, force, or heat, although force is the default. By taking a -20 penalty to the Concentration check, the bands may deal cosmic damage with this blast.

Quaser may also attempt to affect an area with this blast, in which case it is a cone with a size equal to the Concentration check x 50 feet. It allows a Reflex save (DC 15+ ½ Concentration check) for half damage. Either function is an attack action.

Quantum Jump 

Quasar can Quantum Jump at will to travel large distances. Treat as a greater teleport.

Shield 

Quasar puts up a personal barrier that absorbs all attacks, energy and spells. The shield can withstand damage equal to the Concentration check x25. Quasar wielder must concentrate on the shield in order for it to stay active. He suffers a -10 penalty to all other Concentration checks with the band while the shield is active. He can also create an area shield. The shield has a square area of 10 feet x
Concentration check, although this total area can be shaped as he sees fit. Additionally, Quasar may double the area, at the cost of halving the total damage absorbed by the shield. Creating a shield is a standard action.

Speed 

The bands can be used to increase speed. Quasar may gain a temporary Super Speed level equal to one sixth of his Concentration check. Super speed is hard to maintain, so the wielder suffers a -20 penalty to all other Concentration checks while he is under the effects of super speed. Activating Speed is a swift action.

A less taxing but similar usage of the bands merely increases the bearer’s movement rate. Quasar multiplies his movement rate by the result of his Concentration check. This is easier to maintain, so the wielder only suffers a -4 penalty to other Concentration checks while making use of this power.
