“Giant Bee Queen — The Venomous Matriarch of the Hive”

Giant Bee Queen — The Venomous Matriarch of the Hive

The Giant Bee Queen, a towering insect of gleaming golden armor and lethal venom, rules her hive with ruthless strategy, summoning swarms to defend her brood while patrolling lush forests and enchanted glades in relentless pursuit of survival and expansion.

Appearance

Towering above her kin, the Giant Bee Queen’s golden-amber exoskeleton gleams like molten metal. Her colossal wings beat with thunderous power, and her multifaceted eyes glint with uncanny intelligence. A massive, venom-laden stinger arcs from her abdomen, and her mandibles can crush armor or bone with ease. Every feature radiates authority, lethality, and commanding presence.

Behaviour

Calm and calculating when unprovoked, she directs her hive with unmatched precision. Worker and soldier bees obey her silent signals, defending the nest or foraging with perfect coordination. When threatened, she becomes a whirling tempest of wings and venom, striking with deadly accuracy while rarely leaving her hive except to patrol or expand her territory.

Habitat

Giant Bee Queens favor lush forests, dense jungles, and mystical glades rich with nectar and pollen. Their enormous hives—woven from wax and honey—can occupy hollow trees, cliffside caverns, or enchanted groves, often glowing faintly with golden light from stored honey.

Modus Operandi

The Queen rarely acts alone, relying on her swarm to trap, confuse, and weaken intruders while she delivers precise, lethal strikes. She employs aerial agility, swarm coordination, pheromone trails, and honeycomb traps to dominate encounters, using strategy over sheer force.

Motivation

Instinct drives her to protect her brood and maintain the hive’s dominance. Expansion, defence, and species preservation guide every action, making her a relentless, calculating, and formidable guardian.

Venomous Stinger. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) poison damage. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. While poisoned in this way, the target is paralyzed.

Mandibles. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Call Giant Bees (Recharge 5–6). The Queen summons up to 2 Giant Bees within 60 ft. The summoned bees act immediately on the Queen’s turn and follow her commands until destroyed or the end of the encounter.

Wing Buffet (Recharge 6). The Queen beats her wings violently. Each creature within 10 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or take 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone.

Tactics

  • Hive Defense. The Queen rarely leaves her hive, using her summoned Giant Bees to isolate and harry intruders while staying just out of reach.
  • Aerial Superiority. She remains airborne when possible, using Wing Buffet to disrupt formations and prevent melee enemies from reaching her.
  • Poison Exploitation. Prioritizes lightly armored and spellcasting foes, using stinger attacks to paralyze and weaken them.
  • Summon Coordination. Uses Call Giant Bees strategically to bolster offense and defense, positioning summoned bees to block escape or flank targets.

Vulnerable to Smoke (Ex) Smoke from particularly smoky fires or effects (such as that created by a pyrotechnics spell) causes a giant bee to become nauseated if it fails a DC 14 Fortitude save. This condition persists as long as the giant bee remains in the smoke, plus 1d4 rounds.
ECOLOGY
Environment temperate or warm plains

Organization solitary or colony (1 queen and 3-18 giant bees)

Treasure incidental (royal jelly)

Royal Jelly

When a hive of bees needs a new queen to replace one that has died, they feed specially selected larvae royal jelly to trigger the larvae’s transformation into new queens. The first queen to hatch then kills any other new queens.

Royal jelly has remarkable effects on other creatures if eaten. A pound of royal jelly provides enough nourishment for a full day, and grants a +4 resistance bonus on all saving throws against disease for the next 24 hours. If a creature sleeps enough to heal damage within 24 hours of eating at least a pound of royal jelly, it heals twice the
hit points and ability damage as it otherwise would. A typical bee hive contains 2d6 pounds of royal jelly – a single pound sells for 100 gp.
