Xorn – The Gem-Eating Sentinel of the Deep
“A subterranean elemental that hunts treasure and devours gems with relentless precision.”
A subterranean predator of stone and mineral, Xorns roam the underworld in relentless pursuit of treasure, consuming gems and ore with uncanny precision.
Appearance
Xorns are squat, three-legged creatures with thick, rock-like hides mottled in earthy browns, grays, and crystalline flecks. Each limb ends in clawed feet, perfectly adapted for gripping jagged subterranean surfaces. A circular, tooth-lined mouth dominates their rounded bodies, while three gem-like eyes perched atop flexible stalks survey their surroundings with unerring focus. Their overall impression is both alien and elemental, as if the cavern itself has taken sentient form.
Behaviour
Typically solitary, Xorns are meticulous and deliberate in movement, navigating tunnels with quiet, calculated steps. They are largely indifferent to intruders unless provoked, displaying a neutral, treasure-obsessed temperament. Xorns may curiously inspect metal and gemstones, occasionally hoarding or consuming them.
Habitat
Xorns dwell in mineral-rich subterranean environments—caves, deep tunnels, and hidden underground vaults. Their territorial range is limited but fiercely defended, often centered around veins of precious ore or clusters of rare crystals.
Modus Operandi
Xorns feed by ingesting minerals, metals, and gemstones, capable of digesting materials that are toxic or indigestible to most creatures. In combat, they use their clawed legs for swift, three-pronged attacks and their crushing bite to disorient foes. They can tunnel through stone to ambush prey or evade danger with ease.
Motivation
Driven by hunger for ore and precious gems, Xorns’ instincts are rooted in survival and the accumulation of mineral wealth. Their actions are guided less by malice than by a single-minded pursuit of treasure, making them both fascinating and formidable denizens of the deep.

- Focus on separating foes to pick them off individually.
- Avoid spellcasters when possible, relying on Magic Resistance to shrug off dangerous effects.
Lore
Native to the Elemental Plane of Earth, Xorns are elemental sentinels of subterranean wealth. They are drawn irresistibly to gems, metals, and minerals, which they consume not only as sustenance but to neutralize potential threats. Xorns move silently through stone and mineral, giving the impression that the earth itself has come alive.
Despite their predatory appearance, Xorns are neutral and motivated by hunger and territorial instincts rather than malice. They rarely leave mineral-rich caverns unless pursuing new sources of nourishment, and they often go unnoticed until adventurers stumble into their hidden domains. Legends tell of Xorns ambushing miners or treasure hunters, swallowing prized artifacts whole and vanishing into the tunnels like living avalanches of stone.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
All-Around Vision (Ex)
A xorn sees in all directions at the same time, giving it a +4 racial bonus on Perception checks. A xorn cannot be flanked.
Earth Glide (Ex)
A xorn can glide through any sort of natural earth or stone as easily as a fish swims through water. Its burrowing leaves no sign of its passage nor hint at its presence to creatures that don’t possess tremorsense. A move earth spell cast on an area containing a xorn moves the xorn back 30 feet, stunning the creature for 1 round unless it succeeds on a DC 15 Fortitude save.
ECOLOGY
Environment any (Plane of Earth)
Organization solitary, pair, or cluster (3–6)
Treasure standard (precious metals, gems, and magic gems or jewelry only)
Strange creatures as big around as they are tall, xorns have little interest in natives of the Material Plane—except for the gems and precious metals they might be carrying. Lurking beneath the surface for what might seem long stretches of time to humans, a xorn might wait months, even years, for the right treat to come along, assaulting the being carrying its favorite meal, such as a certain gemstone or the right sort of silver.
Adventurers who frequent regions inhabited by xorns often carry with them small chunks of raw ore or relatively inexpensive gemstones or crystals to use as bribes. While the price of a gemstone or piece of metal is often in direct proportion to the object’s flavor and desirability as a meal, most xorns are quite gluttonous and prefer quantity over quality when it comes to food.
Treasure found carried by a xorn or stashed in its lair amounts to little more than snacks set aside for another day. An offering of a particularly delicious (and expensive) jewel or piece of precious metal can swiftly secure a xorn’s temporary allegiance. Since xorns can swim through solid rock with ease, they make excellent guides in underground regions.
