U’tlun’ta (Spearfinger hag)
“Uncover the chilling secrets of Spearfinger, the shapeshifting witch of the Smoky Mountains who feasts on human livers!”
Appearance: Spearfinger, or U’tlun’ta, is a figure of terror in Cherokee mythology. Her skin is as hard as rock, impenetrable by any weapon or force, earning her the name “Stone-dress”. Her right forefinger is elongated and sharp, resembling a spear or an obsidian knife, hence her name, Spearfinger. This finger is not just a weapon but a tool she uses with deadly precision. Her mouth, often depicted as stained with blood, bears testament to her gruesome diet of human livers.
Behavior: Spearfinger is known for her deceit and cunning. She is a master of disguise, capable of shapeshifting into the form of her victims’ family members. This ability allows her to infiltrate communities and homes, gaining the trust of her unsuspecting victims. However, her shapeshifting ability has one limitation – she cannot change her form while being observed.
Habitat: The haunting grounds of Spearfinger are the Great Smoky Mountains, a range that straddles the border between the eastern side of Tennessee and the western part of North Carolina. The dense forests, deep shadows, and rugged terrain of these mountains provide the perfect cover for her nefarious activities.
Modus Operandi: Using her shapeshifting abilities, Spearfinger deceives her victims, often children, by taking on the form of their family members. Once she has gained their trust, she uses her spear-like finger to surgically remove and consume their livers. Her right hand is always clutched tightly, as it conceals her heart, which is located in her right palm – her only weak spot.
Motivation: The motivations of Spearfinger are as chilling as her actions. She is driven by a gruesome appetite for human livers. Her actions serve not just to satiate her hunger, but also to instill fear. The legend of Spearfinger serves as a cautionary tale in Cherokee culture, a reminder of the dangers that can hide in plain sight, even within the safety of one’s home.

This monstrous old woman has skin like stone. From her right hand grows a single long claw.
The u’tlun’ta, also known as the stone hag or the spearfinger hag, is a loathsome predator that lurks at the edges of civilization in order to prey on travelers and innocents. Like most hags, their favorite prey are children, and they delight in masquerading as helpless old ladies in order to come close. Their weapon of choice is a single awl-like finger, capable of making deep and deadly puncture wounds. If they have time to savor a kill, they will devour the unfortunates’ liver and leave the rest of the corpse behind as a warning.
Although an u’tlun’ta may use hill giants in her schemes, they despise stone giants and war with them frequently. An u’tlun’ta is more cunning and magically gifted, but the stone giants have the advantage of numbers and ranged capacity.
A disguised u’tlun’ta may entice adventurers into wiping out a tribe of stone giants for her, and then turn on the adventurers when they are weakened and weary. U’tlun’ta are misanthropic and anti-social even by the standards of hags. They rarely form covens, but may be persuaded to come down from their rocky retreats by the promise of mass murder. A coven containing one or more u’tlun’ta adds stone to flesh and flesh to stone to the spell-like abilities they can use through coven magic.

Special Abilities
Spearfinger (Ex) The long finger of an u’tlun’ta acts as a manufactured weapon that deals 1d12 points of piercing damage and is wielded in one hand. It can be used to make iterative attacks, but cannot be sundered or disarmed, nor can it be wielded in two hands for a damage bonus. An u’tlun’ta can use Sleight of Hand to conceal her finger as if it were a light weapon.
Stonewalker (Su) An u’tlun’ta ignores difficult terrain from natural, worked or magically manipulated stones.
