Man-Eating Ewe, Shepherd’s Doom

Monster, Man-Eating Ewe, Shepherd’s Doom
Create

*“A twitch of the ear. A low, wet bleat. The shepherd turned just in time to see the blood on its wool.”

At first glance, the Man-Eating Ewe resembles a common domesticated sheep—woolly, squat, and unassuming. A closer look reveals disturbing anomalies: its fleece is coarser, tinged with sickly gray hues, and faintly sticky to the touch from residual ichor. Its face is unnervingly leathery, almost humanoid in structure, with overly large, needle-like teeth protruding from dark, blackened gums. Two curling horns, unusually sharp and ridged, sprout from its skull. Its eyes are intelligent and wrong—glassy, yellow, and flecked with red, constantly scanning for prey with unsettling focus.

Behavior

Despite its grotesque nature, the Man-Eating Ewe mimics the docile behavior of a standard sheep when observed or approached—part of its deceptive nature. When left undisturbed, it grazes, bleats, and moves with a herd as expected. But when night falls or the moment is opportune, its true instincts surface. It delights in cruelty and often prolongs its kills, targeting isolated, vulnerable victims first. Though barely intelligent, it exhibits malevolent cunning—waiting, stalking, and using terrain or confusion to separate prey from safety.

Habitat

The Man-Eating Ewe can survive in almost any land environment, but is most commonly found in rural farmland, grazing pastures, or even temple fields where real sheep would be kept. Cults of Baphomet and other chaotic entities deliberately introduce these creatures into remote regions to sow terror and mistrust. When feral, they often dwell in rocky highlands, deep forest clearings, or abandoned homesteads—anywhere prey might wander.

Modus Operandi

Using its outwardly harmless appearance, the Man-Eating Ewe blends in among real livestock, feeding on hay by day and hunting humanoids by night. It prefers stealth and psychological manipulation to brute force. Victims are often found trampled, torn, or riddled with bite marks, their expressions twisted in fear. It is not unusual for a ewe to intentionally leave survivors or mutilated bodies behind to foster terror, sometimes even dragging corpses into town to taunt would-be hunters.

Motivation

Created through blasphemous rituals involving demon ichor, blood sacrifice, and dark conjurations, the Man-Eating Ewe exists for chaos, fear, and pain. It is not simply predatory—it is sadistic. Cults use them not only for their practical products (wool, milk, even breeding) but as mobile agents of terror. A Man-Eating Ewe doesn’t kill merely to feed—it kills to delight in suffering, to break morale, and to corrupt the mundane with evil.

Traits

Pack of the Wicked.
The Man-Eating Ewe has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of the ewe’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and isn’t incapacitated.

Deceptive Herding.
While not in combat, the Man-Eating Ewe is indistinguishable from a normal sheep unless a creature succeeds on a DC 14 Wisdom (Insight) check.

Demonic Viscera (1/Day).
When reduced to 0 hit points, the ewe can choose to erupt in a 10-foot-radius burst of blood and ichor. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

Unnerving Bleat (Recharge 5–6).
The ewe emits a guttural, infernal bleat. Each creature of the ewe’s choice within 30 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of its next turn.

Actions

Multiattack.
The Man-Eating Ewe makes two melee attacks: one with its Gore and one with its Bite.

Gore.
Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 6 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage.

Bite.
Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 5 (1d4 + 2) slashing damage.
If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or take 2 (1d4) necrotic damage at the start of its next turn as the wound festers.

Tactics

The Man-Eating Ewe is a creature of deception, ambush, and cruelty:

  • It hides among real livestock, indistinguishable until it strikes.
  • It targets isolated or injured prey first, often dragging them off to kill away from witnesses.
  • When outnumbered, it flees into a herd to use Deceptive Herding and reengage when the odds are favorable.
  • In groups, Man-Eating Ewes use Unnerving Bleat to scatter enemies before swarming with Pack of the Wicked.

Lore

Created through demonic rituals by cults of Baphomet, the Man-Eating Ewe is a twisted corruption of pastoral life. Still producing wool and milk, it passes as livestock—until it feeds. Used to spread terror in rural communities, it thrives on fear, often striking in the dead of night and leaving behind only blood and bleating echoes. Though barely intelligent, it exhibits a sadistic cunning, savoring suffering as much as the flesh it devours.

ABOUT

Man-Eating Ewes are created by the cult of Baphomet using demon-steeped ichor and sinister rituals. They are popular among the cult for the useful products they generate—a man-eating sheep produces as good a wool and milk as the regular kind—as well as for the amusement generated when a seemingly docile animal turns violent and murderous. Man-eating lambs may find their way into local livestock markets in order to induce fear and chaos, but usually through multiple proxies, so the original source of the murderous beasts is hard to trace. Cults of various demonic entities may use them for sacrificial rituals if humanoid victims are not available.

Man-eating sheep are sexually dimorphic; rams are much larger than ewes. Both sexes have horns, however, and they are somewhat of an intimidating sight. They are just intelligent enough to be evil—man-eating sheep of both sexes enjoy drawing out their attacks in order to induce fear and pain.

Special Abilities

Pack Predator

The Man-Eating Ewe gains a +1 circumstance bonus to attack rolls against creatures that are within reach of one of its allies.

Deceptive Herding (exploration, secret)

While stationary among ordinary sheep, the Man-Eating Ewe is indistinguishable from livestock. A creature must succeed at a DC 18 Perception or Nature check to detect its unnatural presence. On a failure, the creature believes the ewe is a harmless animal.

Unnerving Bleat(auditory, emotion, fear, mental) (1/day, Recharge 5–6)

The ewe unleashes a guttural, demonic bleat. All creatures of its choice within 30 feet that can hear it must attempt a DC 16 Will save:

  • Critical Success: Unaffected.
  • Success: Frightened 1.
  • Failure: Frightened 2.
  • Critical Failure: Frightened 2 and flat-footed until the end of their next turn.

Festering Wound (necromancy, disease)

A creature damaged by the ewe’s Jaws must attempt a DC 15 Fortitude save:

  • Success: No effect.
  • Failure: The wound becomes infected, causing 1 persistent negative damage until the creature receives magical healing or succeeds at a DC 15 flat check.
  • Critical Failure: As failure, and the creature is clumsy 1 for 1 minute.

Demonic Viscera (death trigger, necromancy)

When the Man-Eating Ewe is reduced to 0 HP, it can explode in a burst of corrupted gore. All creatures within a 10-foot emanation must attempt a DC 17 Reflex save:

  • Success: No effect.
  • Failure: 2d6 negative damage.
  • Critical Failure: 2d6 negative damage and sickened 1.

Tactics

  • Ambush Predator: The ewe typically hides among herds, waiting for prey to isolate itself before striking.
  • Coordinated Killers: In groups, Man-Eating Ewes use Unnerving Bleat to scatter targets, then swarm using Pack Predator.
  • Cruel Intelligence: Though not bright, the ewe enjoys toying with frightened victims and may deliberately maim rather than kill to draw out the suffering.
  • Death as Weapon: When surrounded or near death, it positions itself to maximize the impact of Demonic Viscera.

Recall Knowledge – Magical Beast (Arcana, Nature)

DC 17
Bred through abyssal rituals by cults of Baphomet, Man-Eating Ewes are sadistic, demonic sheep disguised among ordinary livestock. Though they continue to produce wool and milk, their true purpose is terror, mutilation, and sacrificial bloodshed. They are loathed by druids and feared by rural communities familiar with their legacy.
