Qasogonaga: The Rainbow Weather Keeper

Qasogonaga
My Images (midjourney.com)

The Qasogonaga is a small, stocky creature resembling a colorful anteater, its body covered in vibrant rainbow-striped fur that seems to shimmer in the light. Its elongated snout and curious eyes give it an almost comical appearance, yet there’s an air of mysticism about it. The fur ranges in hues from deep indigos to fiery reds, creating a striking contrast against the sky or clouds it often strolls upon.

Behavior:
Qasogonagas are benevolent and playful, known for their curious nature and fondness for interacting with other creatures—though their lack of familiarity with mortal customs can lead to some amusing misunderstandings. They are generally peaceful and avoid conflict, using their control over weather to deter threats rather than engage in direct combat. When necessary, they unleash powerful thunderbolts to protect themselves or those they favor. They prefer to observe and influence from afar, only intervening when absolutely necessary or when summoned by those who know the secret to calling upon them.

Habitat:
High in the sky, Qasogonagas treat clouds as solid ground, walking among them as if they were grassy fields. They thrive in regions where weather patterns are crucial for the survival of plants and animals, such as temperate plains, rainforests, and coastal areas. Though they rarely descend to ground level, when they do, they are often found near bodies of water or in open meadows, surveying the land below.

Modus Operandi:
Qasogonagas monitor and regulate the weather, ensuring that the right balance of rain, sun, and wind sustains life below. They are highly attuned to the needs of the ecosystem and can be petitioned to alter weather patterns for those who approach them with respect, kind words, and offerings of good food. They use their ability to walk on air to remain out of reach of potential threats, relying on their mastery of weather to defend themselves or escape danger. When they do intervene, it’s often with precision, using a well-timed thunderbolt or gust of wind to achieve their goal before retreating.

Motivation:
The Qasogonaga is driven by a deep connection to the natural world, motivated by a desire to maintain balance and harmony in the weather. They see themselves as guardians of the skies, ensuring that rain nourishes the earth and storms are kept in check. They despise those who seek to manipulate the weather for selfish or destructive purposes and will go to great lengths to stop such threats. Though they are generally kind and benevolent, their wrath is fierce when nature is endangered.

Abilities and Traits

Buoyant Flame. The Qasogonaga is immune to fire damage. When it takes fire damage, it rises 10 feet in the air for every 5 points of fire damage taken. This effect does not cause it to fall unless its air walk ability is inactive.

Change Shape. The Qasogonaga can use its action to magically transform its appearance or revert to its true form. It can’t duplicate the appearance of a creature it has never seen, and it reverts to its true form if it dies. It retains its shaggy, rainbow-colored fur in any form.

Air Walk. The Qasogonaga can walk on air as if it were solid ground. This ability does not require concentration.

Flame Buoyancy. If the Qasogonaga is subjected to fire damage, it floats upward 10 feet for every 5 points of fire damage. This effect does not cause it to fall if its air walk is active.

Thunderbolt (Recharge 5-6). As an action, the Qasogonaga can unleash a 120-foot line of thunder and lightning. Each creature in that line must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 5d6 lightning damage and 5d6 thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Additionally, any creature that takes damage from this attack must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded or deafened (Qasogonaga’s choice) for 1 round.

Spellcasting. The Qasogonaga is a 11th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16, +8 to hit with spell attacks). It has the following spells prepared:

  • Cantrips (at will): Prestidigitation, Thunderclap
  • 1st level (4 slots): Shield of Faith, Feather Fall
  • 2nd level (3 slots): Wind Wall, Gust of Wind
  • 3rd level (3 slots): Call Lightning, Shout
  • 4th level (3 slots): Control Weather
  • 5th level (1 slot): Cloudkill

Actions

Multiattack. The Qasogonaga makes two slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d6 + 1 bludgeoning damage plus 1d6 lightning damage and 1d6 thunder damage.

Reactions

Thunderous Escape. When the Qasogonaga takes damage, it can use its reaction to cast Misty Step and teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.

Tactics

  • Avoid Direct Combat: The Qasogonaga prefers to fight from a distance, using its spells and Thunderbolt attack to create chaos and disorient enemies.
  • Use Terrain: When in a storm or high places, it takes advantage of its Air Walk ability to stay out of reach.
  • Defensive Maneuvering: If surrounded or in danger, the Qasogonaga uses Thunderous Escape to reposition and avoid melee attacks.
  • Engage with Allies: It can use its weather control abilities and spellcasting to support allies or hinder foes, creating advantageous conditions for itself and its allies.

Description: The Qasogonaga is a small, anteater-like fey with a fantastical appearance, covered in vibrant rainbow stripes. It moves with an air of whimsical authority and is often seen floating above the ground or drifting among clouds. Its demeanor is one of curiosity and playfulness, but it can quickly turn serious when protecting its domain or combating threats to the natural balance.

Taken from Creature Codex

The qasogonaga are a species of strange fey creatures that live high in the sky. There, they monitor and control the weather, ensuring that regular patterns of rainfall support animals and plants living below them. They are generally benevolent, however, and can be convinced or petitioned to create or reduce rain by sentient creatures that know how to call upon them. Although qasogonaga do not fly, they treat the air and clouds as solid objects, strolling about them slowly.

A qasogonaga found at ground level may be there on a mission to survey the effects of the weather, by accident due to losing control of its air walk, or simply out of curiosity. Among mortal lands, they can disguise themselves as a humanoid, but their lack of knowledge of mortal customs and bizarre, multicolored hair mark them as strange. If properly placated with kind words, good foods or assistance in returning to the sky (though the use of bonfires and their buoyant flame ability), qasogonaga can help people with the weather, be it naturally or magically manipulated.

They hate more sinister weather controlling monsters, and may seek the aid of adventurers in dealing with those too powerful for a qasogonaga to handle by themselves.

Although qasogonaga lack physical attacks beyond a stern (and thunderous) headbutt, they are feared in combat. Their mastery of weather allows them to create lightning bolts and thunderclaps in an instant. They rarely fight to the death, preferring to use their thunderbolts to blind opponents at a key moment, then flee and hide.

Qasogonaga Boons and Banes

If using the fey boons and banes system from Pathfinder Adventure Path 119: Prisoners of the Blight, a qasogonaga is capable of bestowing the following boon or bane to creatures it favors or despises.

Boon: You are empowered by the effects of inclement weather. If you are a spell-caster, you gain a +1 bonus to caster level whenever you are in rain. If you are not a spell-caster, you instead gain a +1 competence bonus on all saving throws whenever you are in rain. This effect lasts for 1 day per caster level of the qasogonaga (11 days for the typical specimen).

Bane: Thunder and lightning seem to attract to you. You gain vulnerability to electricity and sonic damage. This effect is permanent until removed.

Special Abilities

  • Buoyant Flame (Su) A qasogonaga is immune to fire damage. Whenever it takes fire damage, it rises 10 feet in the air for every 5 points of damage it otherwise would have taken. This does not cause the qasogonaga to fall unless its air walk spell-like ability is inactive.
  • Change Shape (Su) A qasogonaga retains its shaggy, rainbow colored hair whenever it uses the change shape ability, reducing its bonus to Disguise checks to +2.
  • Thunderbolt (Su) Three times per day, but no more than once every 1d4 rounds, a qasogonaga can create a 120 foot line of thunder and lightning that deals 5d6 points of electricity damage and 5d6 points of sonic damage to any creature caught within it. A DC 18 Reflex save halves the damage. Any creature that takes damage from a qasogonaga’s thunderbolt must succeed a DC 18 Fortitude save or be blinded or deafened (qasogonaga’s choice) for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution based.
