Brumal Pinemaiden
“Uncover the chilling secrets of the Brumal Pinemaiden, the frost-bound fey with a heart as cold as ice!”
Appearance: A Brumal Pinemaiden is a captivating sight to behold. Her skin resembles the rough, textured bark of a pine tree, while her hair is a cascade of icy needles that glimmer in the winter sun. Her eyes are like frozen amber, holding a gaze that is as mesmerizing as it is chilling. Despite her beauty, there is a cold, harsh edge to her that mirrors the unforgiving winter of her home.
Behavior: Brumal Pinemaidens are solitary creatures, preferring the quiet solitude of their enchanted forests. They are fiercely territorial and will defend their home against any perceived threats. Despite their cold demeanor, they are not inherently evil. However, their allegiance to Baba Yaga and their frost-bound existence have made them distant and aloof.
Habitat: They are bound to the enchanted forests under the influence of Baba Yaga. These forests, include the vast taiga forests of Russia, the mixed forests of Poland, or the ancient woodlands of the Balkans, known for their magical properties and mysterious inhabitants. These forests provide a home for the Brumal Pinemaidens under the influence of Baba Yaga’s powerful magic.
Modus Operandi: They wield a variety of spell-like abilities, including icicle dagger, tree stride, frigid touch, frost fall, obscuring mist, unshakable chill, dominate person, and sleet storm. They use these abilities to defend their territory, hunt for food, and deter potential threats. Their magic is deeply tied to their environment, drawing upon the cold and ice of their home.
Motivation: The primary motivation of a Brumal Pinemaiden is survival. They are bound to their icy forests and to Baba Yaga, making their existence a constant struggle against the elements. They also yearn for freedom, a desire born from their original pact with Baba Yaga. Despite their circumstances, they hold onto a glimmer of hope, a faint echo of the dryads they once were.

Innate Spellcasting. Their innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 16). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: icicle dagger, obscuring mist
- 3/day each: tree stride, frigid touch, frost fall
- 1/day each: unshakable chill, dominate person, sleet storm
Cold Snap. When the pinemaiden takes damage from a creature within 10 feet of it, it can use its reaction to create a burst of frigid air. Each creature within 10 feet of the pinemaiden must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Magic Resistance. The pinemaiden has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Frozen Home. The brumal pinemaiden is bound to her frozen forest home. If she willingly leaves this territory, she suffers from a weakening effect, reducing her hit points by 10 for every hour she spends outside of it. This reduction persists until she returns to her home.
Actions
Icy Grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) cold damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the pinemaiden can’t use this attack against another target.
Winter’s Embrace (Recharge 5–6). The pinemaiden releases a wave of freezing energy in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

However, the capricious hag deceived the pinemaidens. She did free them from their trees, but replaced their mystical bond to their trees with a similar bond to herself. The pinemaidens gained a measure of her magical powers over cold, but found themselves unable to leave the frozen forrests. Like dryads away from their trees, pinemaidens cannot survive where temperatures are above freezing. The severing of their bond with their trees and their powerlessness against Baba Yaga’s betrayal has left the pinemaidens bitter and vengeful. Although they retain the ability to step through the trees, they can no longer understand the voices of the trees or reshape them with a caress.
Brumal pinemaidens appear as other dryads, but always bear the characteristics of coniferous evergreens such as pines and cedars. Their skin is like pine bark, their hair like icy needles, and their eyes like frozen amber.
