“Bogle: The Sinister Trickster Spirit of Scottish Folklore”
A bogle is a shadow-dwelling trickster spirit of Scottish lore, lurking at crossroads and ruins to bewilder travelers with eerie whispers and malevolent mischief.

Bogles appear as hunched, shadowy humanoids with elongated limbs and pale, ghostly skin that seems to shimmer in dim light. Their eyes glint with a cunning amber glow, and their jagged, toothy grins hint at mischief. Often partially obscured by a shifting mist, they exude an unsettling, ephemeral presence.
Behaviour:
Bogles are sly and unpredictable, delighting in trickery and confusion. They prefer ambushes, distractions, and psychological manipulation over direct confrontation. Their demeanor ranges from playful tormentor to malevolent stalker, depending on their whim.
Habitat:
These spirits dwell in remote, liminal spaces—dense forests, crumbling ruins, mist-laden marshes, and crossroads. They favor places humans avoid, yet are drawn to paths and settlements to sow mischief.
Modus Operandi:
Bogles specialize in stealth and deception. They disorient travelers with phantom sounds, moving shadows, and false trails. In combat, they strike from darkness, using surprise and misdirection rather than brute strength, and vanish when threatened or outmatched.
Motivation:
Driven by a desire to amuse themselves and sow chaos, bogles feed on fear, confusion, and the embarrassment of their victims. They are not inherently evil, but their curiosity and mischief often put mortals in danger.

Lore.
Bogles are shadow-dwelling tricksters of Scottish legend, drawn to lonely travelers and crumbling ruins, where they delight in fear, confusion, and mischief. They rarely fight directly, preferring ambush, illusion, and deception to manipulate their prey.
Innate Spellcasting.
The bogle’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 13). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: Minor Illusion (action), Disguise Self (action)
- 2/day each: Misty Step (bonus action), Phantasmal Force (action), Confusion (action)
Shadowmeld (Recharge 5–6).
While in dim light or darkness, the bogle can become invisible until it moves or attacks.
Actions
Multiattack. The bogle makes two claw attacks or casts one spell and makes one claw attack.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 3) slashing damage.
Fearful Whispers (Recharge 6). The bogle targets one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of its next turn.
Mischief Trap. The bogle creates an illusory object or hazard in a 10-foot cube within 30 feet. Any creature that interacts with it must succeed on a DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) check or be fooled for 1 minute, as if under the Major Image spell.
Reactions
Evasive Fade. When hit by an attack, the bogle can move up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Tactics
Bogles favor stealth, deception, and mobility. They ambush travelers, strike from shadows, and exploit fear to isolate prey. They use illusions and their innate spellcasting to manipulate the battlefield and avoid direct combat. When threatened or outmatched, bogles vanish using Misty Step or Shadowmeld, reappearing to continue their mischief. They excel as skirmishers and battlefield manipulators rather than head-on combatants.
Bogle

Taken from the Creature Codex
This bruise-colored humanoid creature has a sloping brow, prominent ears and a muscular build. It wears the rough clothes of a farmer and clutches a scythe in its meaty hands. It glares with beady yellow eyes.
The institution of agriculture is one of the most prominent ways that humanoids interfere with the natural order. Although some fey creatures encourage agriculture and assist its works, others devote themselves to the downfall of farming communities—these are the bogles. Bogles view farmers and farming with destructive envy, simultaneously sabotaging farming activities while stealing livestock and crops. A bogle’s mastery of vermin gives it ample ability to spread diseases and despoil farmland.
A bogle closely resembles a goblinoid creature, although they resent that comparison (and may seek to exterminate goblinoid tribes in their territories). Scholars of the faerie world suggest instead that bogles are close relatives of mites, which share the bogles’ love of vermin and disdain towards other creatures.
Bogle lairs tend to be places such as abandoned barns and grain silos; these abodes are typically filled with giant and mundane vermin of all kinds. Due to their martial prowess, many fey nobles use bogles as foot soldiers and shock troops—even goodly fey such as nymphs may keep a few bogles on retainer, keeping them in line with threats and guile. A bogle stands about six feet tall and weighs 200 pounds.

Special Abilities
Martial Training (Ex) A bogle is proficient with all martial weapons.
Terrible Visage (Su) As a standard action, a bogle can deform itself into a hideous beast. All creatures that can see the bogle within 30 feet must succeed a DC 14 Will save or be panicked for 1d4+1 rounds. On a successful save, the creature is instead shaken for 1 round. A creature that successfully saves against this ability cannot be affected by the terrible visage of that bogle for the next 24 hours. This is a mind-influencing fear effect. The save DC is Charisma based.
Uncanny Power (Su) A bogle adds its Charisma bonus as an insight bonus to all weapon attack rolls and combat maneuver checks. This bonus is included in the statistics above.
Vermin Empathy (Ex) This ability functions as a druid’s wild empathy, save that it functions only on vermin. A bogle can use Handle Animal to train vermin and treats a swarm of vermin as a single creature for the purposes of this ability.
