Platylig (Flatwoods Monster), “The Watcher of the Fog”

Platylig (Flatwoods Monster)
Create

The Platylig, commonly known as the Flatwoods Monster, stands at an imposing height of between 10-15 feet, this creature’s most striking feature is its spade-shaped, metallic head, surrounded by a large, hood-like structure resembling a flying saucer. Its body is humanoid but shrouded in darkness, often described as having a bulky, featureless frame, glowing eyes, and long, claw-like hands. Some reports suggest it emits a strange, greenish mist that disorients or causes nausea in those who encounter it.

Behavior: The Platylig is elusive and enigmatic. Witnesses have reported it moving slowly, sometimes standing motionless, and occasionally emitting a hissing sound, as if communicating or warning intruders. Its demeanor appears cautious yet aggressive when provoked. The creature’s most famous encounter involved it releasing a pungent, toxic odor, which caused temporary illness in those nearby, hinting at its potential to defend itself with an environmental weapon.

Habitat: Platylig is believed to inhabit dense forests or rural areas, particularly around West Virginia’s mountainous landscapes. The creature seems to prefer dark, secluded spaces, often near areas where strange lights or UFOs have been sighted. The forests provide ample cover and allow the creature to remain hidden from human activity.

Modus Operandi: Platylig operates stealthily, typically remaining out of sight until it perceives an intruder. It may follow or observe people from a distance, sometimes leading them into isolated locations. The green mist it releases is likely a form of defense, meant to disorient or incapacitate those who get too close. It is also associated with UFO sightings, suggesting it could be linked to extraterrestrial phenomena, possibly connected to alien visitation or abduction scenarios.

Motivation: The Platylig’s motivations remain unclear, but many theories suggest it is either a guardian of its environment or a byproduct of alien experimentation. Its connection to UFOs indicates that it may be part of a larger extraterrestrial presence, possibly sent to monitor or interact with Earth’s inhabitants. Alternatively, it could be an unknown, territorial cryptid, driven by instincts to protect its domain from human intrusion.

Platylig remains one of the most chilling and enduring mysteries in cryptid and UFO lore, with many continuing to search for answers regarding its origin and purpose.

Traits

  • Legendary Resistance (3/Day): If Platylig fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
  • Alien Physiology: Platylig’s body is an unpredictable mix of extraterrestrial biology. Its clawed limbs and chitinous armor grant it resistance to poison and radiant damage.
  • Mist of the Void: As a bonus action, Platylig can release a greenish mist in a 20-foot radius. Creatures within the mist must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
  • Eyes of the Watcher: Platylig can use its gaze to hypnotize or terrify its foes. As an action, a creature within 60 feet of Platylig that can see its glowing yellow eyes must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns to end the effect on itself. Creatures who succeed are immune to this effect for the next 24 hours.
  • Hover (Recharge 5-6): Platylig can levitate off the ground, floating 10 feet above the ground for 1 minute. While levitating, it gains resistance to all melee and ranged weapon attacks. It can use this ability to float over difficult terrain or to stay out of reach of grounded enemies.

Actions

  • Multiattack: Platylig makes two attacks: one with its Claw and one with its Mist Strike or Eye Beam.
  • Claw:
Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
    Hit: 20 (3d8 + 6) slashing damage.
  • Mist Strike:
Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) poison damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute.
  • Eye Beam (Recharge 5-6):
Ranged Spell Attack: +8 to hit, range 60 ft., one target.
Hit: 28 (5d10) force damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be pushed 20 feet away from Platylig and knocked prone.
  • Green Void Pulse (Recharge 6):
Platylig emits a pulse of alien energy, causing a shockwave of toxic force in a 20-foot radius. Creatures within range must make a DC 17 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful save. In addition, the area becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute.

Legendary Actions

Platylig can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Platylig regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Claw Attack: Platylig makes one Claw attack.
  • Levitate (Costs 2 Actions): Platylig hovers 10 feet above the ground for 1 minute, gaining resistance to all melee and ranged weapon attacks.
  • Hypnotic Gaze (Costs 3 Actions): Platylig uses its Eyes of the Watcher on a creature within 60 feet that it can see.

Tactics

  • Platylig prefers to fight from a distance, using its Eye Beam to knock enemies away or disrupt their positioning. It hovers above the ground when possible, evading physical attacks while relying on its mist to poison and weaken opponents.
  • If a group of enemies closes the gap, Platylig will use its Claw to strike, followed by a Mist Strike to continue dishing out poison damage. It will levitate strategically to avoid melee threats while positioning itself for another Green Void Pulse.
  • Platylig’s legendary actions allow it to control the battlefield, using its Claw Attack to maintain offensive pressure or its Hypnotic Gaze to keep enemies frightened and disoriented.
  • If things get too overwhelming, Platylig will retreat into the mist, using Hover to gain temporary respite and escape to a more advantageous position.

Environment and Motivation

Platylig is a predator and observer, lurking in dense, mist-covered forests, typically near sites of UFO activity or abnormal atmospheric phenomena. It is not inherently malevolent but is deeply territorial and will defend itself if provoked. Its primary motivation is to protect its domain and study intruders, often stalking them from the shadows until it deems them a threat.

Platylig’s Fighting Style:
Platylig fights with a cold, calculating nature. It prefers to use its green mist to incapacitate enemies with poison, while employing its hypnotic gaze to instill fear and confusion. When directly engaged, it strikes with long, razor-sharp claws and uses its powerful Eye Beam to push enemies away and control the battlefield. Its levitation adds an extra layer of difficulty for melee attackers, and its ability to use the environment—whether mist, shadows, or floating above the ground—makes it an elusive and dangerous opponent.

Taken from the Creature Codex

Platyligs are strange sapient constructs native to the Ethereal Plane. They are typically found in close association with the xills, a race of xenophobic conquerors who require living hosts for their young. The xills use platyligs as scouts, shock troopers and kidnappers, sending them to gather intelligence on areas they seek to conquer and abduct key personnel. Platyligs prefer quick strikes and hit-and-run tactics, leaving no evidence of their presence save for missing persons and an odd oily residue formed from their weakness clouds.

Platyligs are unusually intelligent for constructs, and have their own society within xill enclaves. This society is deferential to the more numerous xill, but fully egalitarian between each other; platyligs recognize no internal authorities and cooperate with each other on all tasks.

The secrets of platylig creation are unknown to mortals. Even the xill are ignorant in platylig construction. Platyligs instead make more of their own kind in a ritual akin to both ordinary construction and childbirth. Two platyligs build a shell from alien metals and then invest it with part of their own essence. The “parents” are temporarily weakened from this ritual, but recover their strength in a matter of days. All platyligs are exactly nine feet tall and weigh exactly 750 pounds.

Special Abilities

  • Eye-Rays (Su) As a standard action, a platylig can fire two rays of fire from its eyes. Each of these rays functions as a ranged touch attack with a range of 100 feet and no range increment. A creature struck by one of these rays takes 5d6 points of fire damage.
  • Flight (Su) The flight of a platylig is a supernatural ability. It cannot be dispelled, but is suppressed in an antimagic field or similar effect.
  • Planewalk (Su) A platylig can shift from the Ethereal Plane to the Material Plane as a move action. Shifting from the Material Plane to the Ethereal Plane takes a full-round action. A platylig can take a single creature with it when it switches planes. If this creature is not willing or helpless, it can resist this ability with a DC 18 Will save. The save DC is Charisma based.
  • Unnatural Toughness (Ex) A platylig gains bonus hit points based on its Charisma score in addition to the bonus hit points gained due to its size. In addition, it uses its Charisma modifier to calculate its Fortitude save.
  • Weakness Cloud (Su) A platylig can spray a cloud of gas in a 30 foot radius as a standard action. Creatures caught within this area must succeed a DC 18 Fortitude save or become exhausted. Creatures exposed to this effect cannot be affected by the weakness cloud of that platylig for the next 24 hours, regardless of whether the saving throw succeeded or not. A platylig can use this ability three times per day. The save DC is Charisma based.
