Petsuchos, Sacred Fang of the Sunken Shrine

Petsuchos, Sacred Fang of the Sunken Shrine
Create

A colossal crocodile draped in ancient regalia, the Petsuchos is an awe-inspiring fusion of raw beast and divine artifact. Its scaled hide, dark green marbled with gold veins, is etched with glowing hieroglyphs of protection and judgment. Its eyes gleam with eerie emerald light, and fragments of ceremonial armor—tarnished gold plates, gemstone-studded collars, and broken chains—cling to its form like forgotten offerings. In the water, it glides with unnatural silence, its presence heralded only by ripples and a rising dread.

Behavior.
Despite its monstrous form, Petsuchos does not kill without cause. It is a watchful sentinel, motionless for days as it observes its sacred domain with divine patience. It reacts only to threats, desecration, or blasphemy. When roused, it strikes with terrifying precision, punishing intruders not with vengeance, but with divine retribution. It distinguishes between intruders and pilgrims, and may even allow the worthy to pass—if they know the ancient rites.

Habitat.
Petsuchos resides in ancient temple-lakes, subterranean river shrines, or sacred ruins devoted to Sobek. These places are often lost to history, submerged beneath sand, jungle, or time. Its lair is humid, dimly lit by reflected water, and filled with faded murals, broken altars, and the skeletal remains of the impious. Magical wards still linger in the stone, and the air hums faintly with divine stillness.

Modus Operandi.
The Petsuchos excels at ambush and area control. It lurks beneath calm waters, waiting for the moment of transgression. Its first strike is swift—dragging a target into the water to isolate or drown. In battle, it uses divine instincts and environmental mastery, driving foes into traps, flooding chambers, and using its sheer bulk and sacred power to dominate the battlefield. It prioritizes those who touch relics or profane the altar, ignoring those who keep their distance and show reverence.

Motivation.
The Petsuchos is not evil. It is a living relic—bound by ancient pacts to defend the holy sanctuaries and artifacts of Sobek. It has no need for food, no desire for wealth, and no understanding of modern empires. It acts on sacred duty alone. If its temple is desecrated or its relic stolen, it may pursue the offender beyond its waters, not for revenge, but to restore divine balance. To it, the sanctity of the old gods is worth more than any mortal life.

Traits

Amphibious

Petsuchos can breathe both air and water.

Divine Guardian

Petsuchos is bound to a sacred relic, altar, or body of water. While within 1 mile of that location:

  • It regains 20 hit points at the start of each of its turns if it has at least 1 hit point.
  • It can’t be surprised or magically put to sleep.
  • It can use Divine Submersion as a bonus action on its turn.

Sacred Presence

When a creature enters within 30 feet of Petsuchos for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or be Marked by Sobek’s Wrath for 1 minute. A marked creature:

  • Takes radiant damage equal to half the damage it deals to Petsuchos (no save).
  • Can end the mark by taking an action to pray (DC 15 Religion) or succeeding on a Wisdom save at the end of its turn.

Innate Spellcasting

Petsuchos’s innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 20). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • At will: detect magic, thaumaturgy, water walk
  • 3/day each: control water, bless, dispel magic
  • 1/day: insect plague, divine word

Actions

Multiattack

Petsuchos makes three attacks: one with its Bite and two with Tail Slam.

Bite

Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 32 (4d12 + 6) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) radiant damage.
If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be grappled (escape DC 20). At the start of Petsuchos’s next turn, a grappled target must repeat the saving throw or become restrained until the grapple ends.

Tail Slam

Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target.
Hit: 24 (3d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage.
If the target is Medium or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet and knocked prone.

Drown the Defiler (Recharge 5–6)

Petsuchos summons a sacred wave to drag intruders into the depths. Creatures in a 30-foot cone must make a DC 20 Strength saving throw. On a failed save:

  • The creature is pulled 20 feet toward Petsuchos and becomes restrained underwater for 1 minute or until it escapes with a DC 18 Athletics check.
  • On a successful save, the creature is knocked prone and soaked.

Legendary Actions

Petsuchos can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Petsuchos regains all spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Detect. Petsuchos makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
  • Tail Slam. Petsuchos makes one Tail Slam attack.
  • Divine Submersion (Costs 2 Actions). Petsuchos submerges into a water source and reappears in another water space it can see within 60 feet. Creatures within 10 feet of the reappearance must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Wrath of the Crocodile God (Costs 3 Actions). All creatures currently marked by Sacred Presence within 60 feet must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they take 35 (10d6) radiant damage and are blinded until the end of their next turn. On a success, they take half damage and are not blinded.

Lair Actions (Optional)

While within its lair, Petsuchos can take a lair action on initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties). It can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row.

  • Flood the Chamber. Water rushes in from ancient channels. The battlefield becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute. Creatures without a swim speed have disadvantage on Dexterity saves while in the water.
  • Eyes of Sobek. Spectral crocodile eyes open on statues and walls. For 1 round, Petsuchos knows the exact location of every creature in its lair, even through walls and magical darkness.
  • Cursed Water. Up to three water sources become traps. Creatures within 10 feet of one must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or take 22 (4d10) necrotic damage as spectral leeches emerge.

Tactics

  • Ambush: Begins submerged, using stealth to surprise defilers.
  • Target Priority: Marks and drags away casters or relic-touchers.
  • Control: Uses control water and terrain to isolate and drown enemies.
  • Escalation: Unleashes Wrath of the Crocodile God when multiple foes are marked, then teleports into or out of the fray with Divine Submersion.
  • Lair Retreat: If below 50 HP, may retreat into sacred waters and heal rapidly via Divine Guardian.

MYTHIC ABILITIES & POWERS

Mythic Endurance (Ex):
Petsuchos can spend 1 mythic power to automatically succeed on a saving throw or reduce damage by half (Reflex, Fortitude, or Will).

Mythic Smite Desecrator (Su) (6/day):
As a swift action, Petsuchos smites a desecrator, gaining +10 attack and damage, bypassing damage reduction. Against evil or chaotic foes, damage doubles.

Mythic Drown the Defiler (Su):
This enhanced version affects all creatures in a 45-ft. cone. Failed DC 27 Reflex saves result in creatures dragged 30 ft. toward Petsuchos. Creatures failing by 5 or more are stunned for 1 round.

Relic-Bound Regeneration (Su):
Within 150 feet of its sacred relic, Petsuchos gains fast healing 15. This effect ends if the relic is removed or desecrated.

Divine Wrath (Su) (1/day):
As a free action, Petsuchos releases radiant energy. All creatures marked by Sacred Mark within 60 ft. take 60 (12d10) divine damage (DC 27 Reflex half) and are blinded for 1 round.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Bound to Sacred Site (Su):
Petsuchos cannot stray more than 1 mile from its sacred site without suffering 1d6 Constitution damage per hour. If its relic is stolen, it gains a +4 morale bonus on attack rolls and damage against the thief.

Sacred Mark (Su):
Attackers or those who touch the relic must succeed on a DC 27 Will save or be marked for 1 minute. Marked creatures take an additional 3d6 divine damage when harming Petsuchos and cannot benefit from divine healing spells during this time.

TACTICS

Before Combat:
Petsuchos lurks underwater, using detect magic and tremorsense to silently monitor its domain. It conserves mythic powers until key threats emerge.

During Combat:
It begins by unleashing Mythic Drown the Defiler to scatter foes and isolate targets. High-priority enemies—spellcasters or relic thieves—are smitten with Mythic Smite Desecrator and grappled to drag underwater. When multiple foes are marked, Divine Wrath is unleashed to devastating effect. It uses its mobility and mythic powers to avoid flankers and control the battlefield.

Morale:
Driven by sacred duty, Petsuchos fights to the last breath to defend its relic. If the relic is stolen, it relentlessly pursues the offender beyond its lair.

Petsuchos

A divine guardian-beast enshrined in ancient gold and forgotten prayers, the Petsuchos is a sacred avatar of Sobek’s will—slumbering in temple pools or sunken tombs until awakened by trespass or sacrilege.

Combat

Improved Grab (Ex): If Petsuchos hits with its bite, it can immediately attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Constrict (Ex): Petsuchos deals 4d8+15 damage on a successful grapple check.

Drown the Defiler (Su): Once every 1d4 rounds, as a standard action, Petsuchos can unleash a 45-foot cone of surging divine water. All creatures in the area must make a DC 27 Reflex save or be dragged 30 feet toward Petsuchos and take 6d8 bludgeoning damage. On a success, they take half damage and are not moved. Creatures that fail by 5 or more are also stunned for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Smite Desecrator (Su): Six times per day, Petsuchos may declare one target who has harmed it or desecrated a holy site or relic. It gains a +10 sacred bonus to attack rolls and damage against that target for 1 round. If the target is evil or chaotic, damage is doubled.

Sacred Mark (Su): Any creature that damages Petsuchos or touches its relic must make a DC 27 Will save or be marked with a glowing divine sigil for 1 minute. Marked creatures take an additional 3d6 divine damage whenever they damage Petsuchos and cannot benefit from divine healing for the duration. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Special Qualities

Divine Resilience (Ex): Petsuchos gains a +4 deflection bonus to AC and saving throws.

Relic-Bound Regeneration (Su): While within 150 ft. of its sacred relic or shrine, Petsuchos regenerates 10 hp per round. This ability ceases if the relic is removed, desecrated, or warded against divine magic.

Tremorsense (Ex): Petsuchos can detect the location of anything in contact with the same body of water or ground within 30 feet.

Scent (Ex): As the standard monster ability.

Damage Reduction (Ex): DR 15/magic and silver.

Immunities (Ex): Petsuchos is immune to poison and disease.

Resistances (Ex): Fire resistance 15, cold resistance 15.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp)

Caster Level 15th. Save DCs are Charisma-based.

  • At will — detect magic, create water, speak with animals (reptiles only)
  • 3/day — control water, divine favor, dispel magic
  • 1/day — divine power, insect plague, zone of truth

Tactics

Before Combat: Petsuchos remains submerged and motionless, relying on tremorsense and scent. It activates divine favor if given a moment of warning.

During Combat: It begins with Drown the Defiler to scatter foes and pull in priority targets, then uses Smite Desecrator on divine casters, relic-touchers, or evil enemies. It grapples to crush and isolate, uses tail slaps to trip or knock away support characters, and prioritizes threats to the sacred relic.

Morale: Petsuchos is unshakable in its duty. It fights to the death to protect its relic. If the relic is removed, it will pursue across land or sea, taking 1d6 Constitution damage per hour beyond 1 mile from the relic, but never stopping.

Description

A mountain of muscle and divinely radiant gold, Petsuchos is no mere crocodile—it is a living embodiment of holy wrath and ancient justice. The faithful may pass unscathed. The defilers will be dragged into the depths and never rise again.
