Eucladoceros — The Many-Branched Stag of Primeval Woodlands

Eucladoceros — The Many-Branched Stag of Primeval Woodlands
Created with Midjourney

Eucladoceros is a large prehistoric stag known for its astonishingly intricate, multi-branched antlers—less a pair of horns and more a latticework crown of spears—combining athletic grace, territorial ferocity, and ritualized dominance displays that can transform tranquil woodland clearings into arenas of thunderous clashes.

Appearance

Standing slightly taller than a modern elk at the shoulder, Eucladoceros possesses a lean but powerful build designed for endurance and sudden bursts of speed. Its defining feature is its expansive rack of antlers: layered, repeatedly forked, and spreading outward in an intricate canopy of sharpened tines. The antlers are tall and complex rather than shovel-broad, giving the creature a regal, crown-like silhouette. Its coat ranges from tawny brown to deep umber, thickening in colder climates, while mature stags develop a heavier neck and pronounced musculature during rutting season.

Behaviour

Eucladoceros travels in small herds composed of females and juveniles, with dominant stags joining during mating season. Outside the rut, it is alert but non-aggressive, relying on keen senses and swift retreat to avoid predators. During the breeding season, males engage in dramatic antler clashes—ritualized contests of strength and endurance that rarely end in death but often leave visible scars.

Habitat

This stag favors open woodlands, forest edges, and grassy plains interspersed with scattered trees. It avoids dense thickets where its elaborate antlers could become entangled, instead thriving in mixed terrain that allows both grazing and room to maneuver.

Modus Operandi

If threatened, Eucladoceros lowers its antlers and delivers a focused, driving charge aimed at goring or throwing opponents aside. It uses sweeping head movements to control space, leveraging the reach and complexity of its rack to intimidate or disarm attackers. Against predators, it may form a defensive cluster with herd members, placing antlered stags outward.

Motivation

Guided by instinct, Eucladoceros seeks food, seasonal migration routes, and the protection of its herd. Dominant stags are compelled to defend breeding rights and territory. In druidic traditions, some are said to embody balance and natural sovereignty—living symbols of structured wilderness rather than unchecked savagery.

Traits

Charge. If the eucladoceros moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a Gore attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Keen Hearing and Smell. The eucladoceros has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Sure-Footed. The eucladoceros has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone.

Rutting Instinct. When the eucladoceros is reduced to half its hit points or fewer, it has advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and its Gore attack deals an extra 3 (1d6) piercing damage.

Actions

Multiattack. The eucladoceros makes one Gore attack. If the target is prone, it makes one Hooves attack against that target.

Gore. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) piercing damage.

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one prone creature.
Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) bludgeoning damage.

Sweeping Rack (Recharge 5–6). The eucladoceros sweeps its massive branching antlers in a wide arc. Each creature of its choice within 10 feet must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 13 (3d8) bludgeoning damage and is pushed up to 10 feet away from the eucladoceros. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn’t pushed.

Tactics

The eucladoceros prefers open woodland and forest edges where it has space to maneuver. It begins combat with a full-speed charge, attempting to knock a foe prone before trampling it. If surrounded, it uses Sweeping Rack to clear space before repositioning. Outside rutting periods, it disengages and flees when seriously wounded; once bloodied, however, it fights with fierce territorial resolve.

DESCRIPTION

This towering stag stands over seven feet at the shoulder, its muscular frame crowned by an immense lattice of branching antlers that spread like a living thicket of bone. Unlike broad-palmed elk, its rack rises in layered forks, each tine sharpened through years of ritual combat.

Though herbivorous and generally wary, a eucladoceros becomes fiercely territorial during mating season. Rival males clash with thunderous impacts that echo across woodland valleys, splintering saplings and churning earth beneath their hooves. Predators that attempt to single out calves often find themselves impaled or hurled aside by a sudden, devastating charge.
