Giant Poisonous Frog, “Toxic Grace”

The Giant Poisonous Frog is an eye-catching amphibian over a foot in length, weighing approximately 10 pounds. Its slick, semi-translucent skin shimmers in vivid shades of emerald green, mottled with blotches of crimson along its flanks. Electric-blue stripes run in jagged patterns down its muscular hind legs, flashing like warning signals when it leaps or prepares to strike. Its golden, unblinking eyes have slit pupils and a faint, reflective sheen, hinting at its nocturnal nature. Minute pores across its back glisten with toxic secretions, releasing a musky, sharp scent when agitated.

Behavior

Solitary and territorial, the Giant Poisonous Frog is an ambush predator with surprisingly cunning instincts. Though not intelligent by humanoid standards, it is patient and reactive, using camouflage and stillness to mask its presence. It prefers to avoid conflict unless hunting or threatened, relying on its venomous bite to disable prey or drive off attackers. During mating season, males emit a deep, resonant croak that reverberates through the swamp like a distant drumbeat.

Habitat

These amphibians thrive in warm, humid environments, most commonly found in dense jungle wetlands, tropical riverbanks, and steamy marshes. They favor shaded pools beneath thick foliage, often near natural clearings where sunlight filters through—an ideal place to bask and hunt. Tribal cultures living in or near these areas often view them as sacred or dangerous omens, depending on local beliefs.

Modus Operandi

A Giant Poisonous Frog typically remains motionless beneath brush or submerged with only its eyes above the water. It strikes with a sudden lunge, clamping down on prey with a venomous bite. Its toxin causes rapid-onset organ degradation, weakening the target’s constitution over time. Against larger threats, it will bite and retreat, relying on the poison to take its toll while it hides and waits. Its preferred prey includes small mammals, reptiles, and birds that venture too close to its lair.

Motivation

Driven primarily by hunger and territorial instinct, the Giant Poisonous Frog has no complex agenda. However, during breeding seasons or droughts, its aggression may increase as it competes for mates or dwindling resources. To some jungle tribes, its poison is a coveted resource, leading to ritualistic hunts or domestication attempts—though few survive long enough to tame one.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 5 (2d4) poison damage and be poisoned for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Bonus Actions

Toxic Dash (Recharge 5–6).
The frog makes a leaping movement up to 20 feet to an unoccupied space it can see. All creatures it passes over or adjacent to during this movement must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 3 (1d6) poison damage from its airborne toxin trail.

Tactics

  • Ambusher: The frog waits in concealment near water or thick vegetation using Camouflaged Predator, striking only when a target is close.
  • Hit-and-Fade: It prefers to bite and then use Toxic Dash to retreat, relying on its poison to weaken prey.
  • Mobility Hunter: Makes use of its swim and climb speeds to attack from difficult terrain, avoiding enemies with poor movement options.

Variant: Harvested Venom

A creature proficient with a poisoner’s kit can harvest enough toxin from a slain giant poisonous frog to create 1 dose of frog venom. This poison can be applied to a weapon or dart as an action.

Frog Venom (Injury). A creature hit by a weapon coated with the venom must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 2d4 poison damage and be poisoned for 1 minute.
