(Dinosaur)“Lambeosaurus: The Echoing Giant of Primeval Wetlands”

The Lambeosaurus is a massive duck-billed dinosaur defined by its iconic axe-blade crest, a hollow resonator that amplifies its booming calls across miles of marshland; peaceful yet imposing, it roams in disciplined herds through broad floodplains, relying on sound, size, and coordinated movement to survive in prehistoric environments fraught with danger.

Appearance

The Lambeosaurus is a towering, heavy-framed herbivore with powerful hind legs, a long balancing tail, and a wide duckbill built for stripping dense vegetation. Its signature feature is a sweeping, hatchet-shaped cranial crest—hollow, ornate, and visually commanding—rising high above the skull like a natural war-standard. Its hide carries earthy greens, ochres, and muted patterns that break its outline amid reed beds and forest shadows.

Behaviour

Highly social and ever-alert, Lambeosaurs travel in tight-knit herds governed by constant vocal communication. Their deep, resonant calls establish territory, relay warnings, and maintain group cohesion. Though gentle grazers by nature, they shift instantly from calm to defensive unity: stamping, circling, or launching into coordinated stampedes that trample obstacles and confuse would-be predators.

Habitat

Lambeosaurs inhabit lush wetlands, river deltas, humid forests, and broad floodplains rich in leafy growth. They prefer warm climates, soft soils, and reliable water sources, following ancient migratory routes that trace the contours of fertile valleys. Their presence signals a thriving, stable ecosystem.

Modus Operandi

Non-predatory but far from helpless, Lambeosaurs rely on vigilance and herd tactics for defense. A designated sentinel issues a booming alarm, prompting the herd to form a protective wedge, trample forward en masse, or scatter to deny predators a clear target. Solitary adults fight with crushing hind-leg kicks, sweeping tail blows, and sheer body weight capable of shattering brush, bone, and undergrowth alike.

Motivation

Lambeosaurs are driven by instinctive community, the search for dependable food sources, and the ancient rhythm of migration. Their crest-borne calls express everything they value—safety, unity, navigation, and warning—revealing a creature whose world is shaped by sound, movement, and the enduring strength of the herd.

Traits

Crest Resonance

The Lambeosaurus’ hollow crest produces powerful low-frequency sound. Its Thunderous Call ability has advantage against creatures within 10 feet of a solid surface (cliffs, buildings, stone walls, dense trees) because of amplified reverberation.

Stampede Instinct

If the Lambeosaurus moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hits with Goring Slam, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
If the target is prone, the Lambeosaurus may make a Trample attack as a bonus action.

Herd Alertness

While within 60 feet of another Lambeosaurus, it has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and Dexterity saving throws.

Actions

Multiattack

The Lambeosaurus makes two attacks: one with Goring Slam and one with Tail Lash.

Goring Slam

Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 17 (2d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage.

Tail Lash

Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and the target must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet.

Thunderous Call (Recharge 5–6)

The Lambeosaurus unleashes a deep, resonant bellow.
Each creature of its choice within 30 ft. must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) thunder damage and becoming deafened until the end of its next turn on a failure; half damage and no deafness on success.

If the Lambeosaurus is adjacent to a cliff, canyon wall, fortress wall, or similar surface, the thunder damage increases to 28 (8d6).

Reactions

Herd Rally

When the Lambeosaurus takes damage, it emits a sharp alarm call.
One allied beast or dinosaur within 60 feet can use its reaction to move up to half its speed toward the attacker without provoking opportunity attacks.

Combat Tactics

Although peaceful grazers, Lambeosaurs become highly dangerous when threatened:

  • Starts combat with Thunderous Call, softening attackers at range.
  • Charges at vulnerable targets to trigger Stampede Instinct and knock enemies prone.
  • Uses Tail Lash to keep foes from flanking or to shove them into hazards.
  • Frequently fights as a unit, with Herd Rally enabling herd members to reposition quickly.
  • Tries to escape once the herd has an opening, fighting only to clear a path.

In the wild, a Lambeosaurus is less a predator and more a living avalanche—unstoppable once it builds momentum.

This towering duck-billed dinosaur moves in disciplined herds, its resonant crest producing booming calls that echo across ancient wetlands.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Herd Awareness (Ex)

A Lambeosaurus gains a +2 bonus on Perception checks and Reflex saves when within 60 feet of at least one other Lambeosaurus.

Stampede Charge (Ex)

If a Lambeosaurus moves at least 20 feet in a straight line and hits with its gore attack, the target must succeed at a DC 23 Reflex save or be knocked prone.
A prone creature is automatically hit by the Lambeosaurus’s trample attack.

Thunderous Bellow (Ex)

Once every 1d4 rounds, the Lambeosaurus unleashes a resonant, low-frequency roar through its hollow crest.
Creatures within 40 feet must succeed at a DC 19 Fortitude save or take 4d6 sonic damage and be deafened for 1 round; those adjacent to a cliff, canyon wall, or other large surface take +2d6 sonic damage due to reverberation.
A successful save halves the damage and negates the deafness.

Trample (Ex)

Reflex DC 23 halves damage. The save DC is Strength-based.

TACTICS

Before Combat

A Lambeosaurus relies on vigilance and herd structure. It flees unless cornered or defending young. Herd members position themselves to encircle threats when multiple are present.

During Combat

The dinosaur begins with Thunderous Bellow to disrupt enemies at range, then attempts a Stampede Charge to knock foes prone. A prone enemy is immediately targeted with Trample.
It uses its tail to keep creatures at distance or shove them into hazards such as mud, water, or dense underbrush.

Morale

A Lambeosaurus fights only long enough to open a path to safety.
If reduced to 25 hp or fewer, it withdraws; herds retreat together in a coordinated stampede.

DESCRIPTION

A Lambeosaurus stands 20 feet tall at the crest and measures nearly 50 feet from nose to tail. Its signature, axe-shaped crest amplifies deep calls used for communication, warning, and long-distance coordination. Peaceful yet formidable, these herbivores traverse floodplains in migratory herds that shake the earth with every step.

A lambeosaur is a very large animal, smaller than its relative the anatotitan, but still averaging over 30 feet long. It still is a common prey item for many carnivorous dinosaurs, but lambeosaurs live in large herds to protect themselves from danger. Each herd has a distant relationship with other nearby herds, and their crests act as powerful amplifiers for their hooting cries. The distress calls of a lambeosaur can be heard from almost a mile away, and if a distress call is given, other herds in earshot flee as rapidly as possible.

COMBAT

Lambeosaurs shy away from combat unless they or their offspring are threatened. If so, they fight using their powerful tails.

Trample (Ex): A lambeosaurus can literally run over any creatures in its way that are of Large or smaller size. Creatures trampled must make a Reflex save (DC 21 half) or take 2d10+9 damage. The save DC is Strength-based.

Skills: Lambeosaurs have a +4 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks.
