Create

Devil Monkeys are lean, muscular creatures standing between 5 and 7 feet tall, their frames covered in coarse, dark fur that bristles when agitated. Their elongated limbs end in clawed hands and feet capable of rending flesh, while powerful, spring-loaded hind legs allow them to leap extraordinary distances. A lupine muzzle lined with jagged teeth frames their snarling faces, and their glowing, ember-red eyes lend them a terrifying, infernal aspect.

Behaviour
These creatures are notoriously aggressive and unpredictable, prone to sudden outbursts of violence even when not directly threatened. They shriek and howl to announce their presence, using sound both as intimidation and as a means of disorienting prey. Devil Monkeys often attack in frenzied flurries of slashes and bites, then retreat into the dark, only to strike again from another angle.

Habitat
Devil Monkeys haunt rugged woodlands, mountainous passes, and remote rural stretches where human settlement brushes against wilderness. They are especially active at night, ranging far from their lairs in caves, abandoned mines, or dense forests. Though solitary by nature, overlapping territories sometimes create bloody conflicts between rival Devil Monkeys.

Modus Operandi
A Devil Monkey prefers to stalk its prey from concealment before making sudden, bounding leaps to close distance in a single terrifying instant. It will claw and bite with reckless ferocity, often targeting livestock or unwary travelers near the edges of civilization. When outmatched, it uses its prodigious leaping ability to escape into treetops, cliffsides, or the shadows of the wilderness.

Motivation
Driven by instinctive hunger and violent territoriality, Devil Monkeys hunt not merely for sustenance but seemingly for the thrill of the chase. Their aggression may mask a primal fear of intrusion into their domain, but many scholars suspect they take perverse delight in terrorizing creatures larger than themselves. Whatever their true purpose, one certainty remains: a Devil Monkey never forgets a trespasser, and will harry them until it has tasted blood.

  • Terrifying Screech (Recharge 5–6). Each creature the Devil Monkey chooses within 60 ft that can hear it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be frightened for 1 minute (save repeats at end of each turn).

Reactions

  • Bounding Evasion. When targeted by an attack, the Devil Monkey leaps up to 20 ft. If this moves it out of range, the attack misses.

Legendary Actions

The Devil Monkey can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one option can be used at the end of another creature’s turn. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Detect. Makes a Wis (Perception) check.
  • Shriek. One creature within 30 ft must succeed on a DC 13 Con save or be deafened until the end of its next turn.
  • Leaping Strike (Costs 2 Actions). Leaps up to 20 ft and makes one Claw attack.

Combat

A Devil Monkey begins combat with a Terrifying Screech, then leaps into melee. It isolates targets, fights savagely, and uses Bounding Evasion to reposition. Feeds on fallen foes to fuel its Bloodthirst.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Puncture Armor (Ex)

A devil monkey’s fangs are devastating against armor and apparel. When a devil monkey hits with its bite, the creature bitten must succeed at a DC 17 Reflex save or the damage dealt by the bite is also dealt to any armor worn by the creature. If the target isn’t wearing armor and fails this save, there’s a 50% chance the bite damage is applied to a magic item worn in the body, chest, head, or shoulders slot (determine which item is bitten randomly among all potential targets). The save DC is Constitution-based.

Devil monkeys are so named for their bright red-orange fur and distinct hair tufts that resemble horns. Despite their name and strange appearance, these primates have no connection to devils or other supernatural creatures, although their penchant for violence and lairing in regions not typically noted for primate fauna often sparks rumors of strange monsters or mythical invaders. In truth, devil monkeys are giant relatives of baboons. Like their smaller cousins, devil monkeys have doglike muzzles and large canine teeth. Their tails are relatively short and not prehensile. Devil monkeys mostly move around on all fours, but when they rest on their haunches, their heads can reach up to 18 feet high. A typical devil monkey weighs 15,000 pounds.

Owing to their rarity, reclusiveness, and unusual appearance, devil monkeys are often surrounded by legends. In many cases, they are mistaken for other creatures. Their spoor might suggest an unusually large bear or other predator, while those who catch sight of the primate may mistake it for a devil or other fiend. Even when they’re recognized as a kind of monkey, the fact that they may live far from typical monkey territory often adds to their air of sinister mystery.
