French buccaneers took over part of the west coast and French settlers arrived soon thereafter. After decades of conflicts Spain finally ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France, thus establishing the basis for the later national divisions between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The Captaincy General of Santo Domingo has an important role in the establishment of Spanish colonies in the New World. It is the headquarters for Spanish conquistadors on their way to the conquest of the Americas.
