The Martian Manhunter (J’onn J’onzz) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Joseph Samachson and designed by artist Joe Certa, the character first appeared in the story “The Manhunter from Mars” in Detective Comics #225 (Nov. 1955). Martian Manhunter is one of the seven original members of the Justice League of America and one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe.

Martian Manhunter has been featured in other DC Comics products, such as video gamestelevision seriesanimated films and merchandise like action figures and trading cards.

The character appeared in the series Smallville, played by actor Phil Morris. Martian Manhunter is also part of the core cast of the television series Supergirl and is portrayed by David Harewood. The character also appears on other Arrowverse shows. Harry Lennix portrays the character in the DC Extended Universe, making his debut under the guise of General Calvin Swanwick in the 2013 film Man of Steel; and appears in his Martian form in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.

Martian Vision: Once per round as a standard action, J’onn (Martian Manhunter) can unleash a blast of energy from his eyes. This deals 15d6 force damage and requires a ranged touch attack to connect. Martian vision has a range of 500 feet.

Psionics: J’onn has an astounding array of mental abilities available to him. J’onn has a manifester level of 25 for the purposes of power resistance.

Alter Form: J’onn is capable of rearranging his molecular structure at will. He can decrease his density enough to become incorporeal or increase it to vastly intensify his Strength and durability. Every level that he increases it costs him a swift action each round to maintain. The benefits for increasing his density one step are as follows.

  • Damage reduction 2/-
  • Natural armor +1
  • Fortitude save +1
  • +1 melee damage.
  • +1 effective size increase

Cloud Mind: Range 100 feet, Will DC 37 negates. J’onn may inflict confusion on any creatures within range of this attack. For every 10 creatures affected, the DC is lowered by 1. This is a full round action.

Fear: Range 100 feet, Will DC 37 negates. J’onn may inflict fear upon any creatures within range of this attack. For every 10 creatures affected, the DC is lowered by 1. Any creature failing its save by more than 10 points is panicked instead. This is a full round action.

InvisibilityJ’onn may turn himself invisible at will as a swift action. This functions as greater invisibility.

Mind Crush: Range 100 feet, Will DC 37 negates. As a standard action, J’onn may shatter the mind of a creature. This attack deals 2d6 points of IntelligenceWisdom and Charisma damage.

Mind Link: J’onn can link willing minds together for communication. As a swift action, a creature with a mind link may mentally contact another creature on the link. In all other ways this functions similar to telepathy. Only projected thoughts can be read by another creature on the link. This link does not work across planar boundaries.

Read Mind: Range 1000 feet, Will DC 37 negates. J’onn may detect surface thoughts as a standard action or deep thoughts as an intense action. Physical contact with the creature increases the Will DC to 41.

Shapechange: J’onn may alter his form into that of any real or imaginary creature. He takes on the size and all of the natural and extraordinary qualities of the shape and retains his own as well. He may use this ability to impersonate another race, granting him a +20 bonus on Disguise checks. It is a swift action for J’onn to shapechange.

Superspeed Level 13 (Ex):

  • The following benefits are provided from Superspeed level 13:
  • +13 speed bonus to AC, reflex saves and initiative
  • +13 speed bonus to attacks and thrown damage
  • +6 speed bonus to melee damage rolls.
  • J’onn gains 13 swift actions every round.
  • When using the run action, J’onn moves at x40 his normal speed. (31,200 ft., fly 62,400 ft.)

Telepathy: J’onn’s telepathy has a base range of 1000 feet. As a swift action, he can triple this range. He can expend multiple swift actions to continue tripling the range. This is a true tripling each time and an exception to the normal d20 rules regarding tripling a triple.
