Domovoi

Domovoi
My Images (midjourney.com)

Appearance: The Domovoi, a diminutive creature, typically stands at around a foot tall. Covered in matted fur that ranges in color from earthy brown to gray, it has a long, unruly beard and a pair of mischievous eyes that glint with intelligence. Despite its small stature, it exudes an aura of ancient wisdom.

Behavior: Possessing a dual nature, the Domovoi is both a guardian and a trickster. Known for its attachment to a specific household, it can be either benevolent or mischievous, depending on the family’s actions. It forms a unique bond with the inhabitants and cares for the well-being of the household. However, if neglected or offended, the Domovoi may resort to pranks or become a harbinger of misfortune.

Habitat: It predominantly resides within the nooks and crannies of a family’s home, favoring dark corners, hearths, or underneath furniture. It is rarely seen, choosing to reveal itself only to those it deems worthy or to assert its presence through subtle signs.

Modus Operandi: The Domovoi operates in the shadows, quietly observing the household and influencing its fortunes. It can offer protection, warn of impending danger, or even assist with chores if pleased. Conversely, it may create disturbances, hide belongings, or cause general mischief when displeased. Building a strong relationship with the one requires maintaining a harmonious and respectful home.

Motivation: The primary motivation of the Domovoi is to foster harmony within the household it inhabits. It thrives on positive energy, laughter, and a sense of family unity. Its mischievous actions often serve as a reminder to the inhabitants to uphold these values. Ultimately, the Domovoi seeks acknowledgment, respect, and a lasting connection with those it watches over.

Innate Spellcasting. The domovoi’s innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 12). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • At will: mage hand (invisible hand only)
  • 1/day each: detect magic, guidance, minor illusion

House Guardian. The domovoi has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. Additionally, it gains a +2 bonus to AC when within 10 feet of the household it guards.

Mirthful Mischief. The domovoi can use its bonus action to create an illusory duplicate of itself within 5 feet. The duplicate can move and make simple gestures, providing advantage on Charisma (Deception) checks.

Mischievous Trickster. The domovoi can use its action to cast prestidigitation, targeting an area within 30 feet. It can create harmless sensory effects or minor magical tricks.

Invisibility. As a bonus action, it can turn invisible until it attacks or casts a spell.

Actions

Tiny Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +1 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2 (1d4 – 1) bludgeoning damage.

Prankish Distraction. The domovoi uses its bonus action to distract a creature within 5 feet of it. The distracted creature has disadvantage on its next attack roll or ability check.

Barely knee-high, this small creature looks like a hairy old man with more beard than flesh.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Telekinesis (Su)

A domovoi defends itself and its home through telekinesis. This ability functions as the spell telekinesis, usable at will, with a caster level equal to the domovoi’s Hit Dice (CL 5 for most domovoi). A typical domovoi has a ranged attack roll of +5 when using telekinesis to hurl objects or creatures, and can use the ability on objects weighing up to 50 pounds. If a domovoi attempts to hurl a creature with this ability, that creature can resist the effect with a successful DC 14 Will save. The save DC is Charisma-based.

ECOLOGY

Environment any land
Organization solitary or gathering (2–6)
Treasure none

These sometimes-helpful fey creatures known as house spirits bind themselves to rural families and live among them. Some bear a resemblance to the family’s ancestors, a similarity that grows more obvious the longer they remain in the family’s service. House spirits use their compression ability and invisibility to stay out of the sight of those among whom they live.

The work never ends for those who live on farms or in small villages, and the wise often seek the aid of the fey folk while pursuing their daily chores. A family might leave a piece of bread under the stove or an old boot in the closet to attract a domovoi to their home. Domovoi help with small tasks like churning butter and mending clothes, but mostly protect the home from intruders and misfortune.

These helpful fey can also tell the fate of the family they protect, but grow annoyed when asked to do so too often.

A domovoi appears as small, old man no more than 2 feet tall, covered in hair and with a long, shaggy beard.Section 15: Copyright Notice
